Patch 1.74

I was scrolling through the options on Civ 4 and saw the "Check for updates" button. It fired up install shield and began to download 1.74. Before it could finish installation, it crashed and closed comepletely.

I tried loading Civ 4 and received a missing file error message. I logged onto Civ 4s official site, and here at Fanatics and cannot find a 1.74 patch for Civ 4.

I popped my CD back in and ran Setup from the explore function and received the error "Update 1.74 exists and must be removed before 1.61 can be installed". I got into add/remove programs and receive a -5001 error. I emptied ALL Temp file folders on my system. And it still cannot fire up the uninstaller.

I tried to manually remove all evidence of Civ 4 from my computer, including hidden files and regedit. Yet it still appears in add/remove programs, and 1.74 is still present.

What can I do to get the installer to overwrite 1.74? Or what else can I do to try and remove 1.74 from my system? Or where can I find 1.74 patch, so I can finalize the install so I can remove Civ 4 from my computer?

Or, you could just fix the problem that exists with 1.74

Update your DirectX. It fixes the issues with patch 1.74

See below for a process that has helped others. It includes stuff for Warlords and BTS so some of the registry settings & folders won't exist for you.

Delete the "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games" folder (assuming that where you installed it), delete the "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4" folder if it is still there.

Go into the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. If this is the only game you have from Firaxis delete the key called "Firaxis Games" otherwise delete any sub keys of Firaxis Games" starting with "Sid Meier's Civilization 4". Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete the following keys {4377F918-E6C9-4ECA-A7F5-754B310B7ED8}, {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}, {3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228} and {32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}.


Also delete the following folders if they exist :
"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}"
"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}"
"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}"

NB. The above folders are hidden so you need to change your windows explorer settings to see it.

Reboot, reinstall Civ4 and reboot again. With luck that will get you back to a known state (crosses fingers). After that you can apply the DirectX update from MIcrosoft & then the 1.74 patch.

I purchased the Civ IV vanilla with the 2 expansions on ebay today. I only have a dial up connection so i wanted to have the patches already on my computer saved by the time they came. Which patch would I need to get if I were installing all 3? Would I just get the 3.03 patch for Beyond the Sword and that's it or will I need to patch Civ IV first with the 1.74? I don't want to waste time downloading unnecessary patches so if someone would be cool enough to specify what I should do I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

It would really have helped if you had opened a new thread rather than adding to an existing thread. That said, BTS upgrades vanilla to 1.74 and Warlords to 2.13. I don't think vanilla and warlords have to be @ 1.61 & 2.08 beforehand but I can't say that for certain.

What you should do is update your system with DirectX before installing Civ4. The other patch you will want is 3.13 for BTS once it finally gets released.
