Patch 174

What?After more than a year of not playing CIV IV online, I tried it.
The game said I needed patch_174, so I download it.
When it is downloaded, it says "Click OK to exit the game and install the patch."
When I do that, it exits the game to the desktop, but the patch doesn't start to install.

I then checked the internet, and it seems that a lot of people have problems with patch 1.74.
As all these reports where from 2007 or 2008, I post this because it's 2010,
and I hope that there's some way to install it after all?

Steps:

1. With an older version of CIV IV, log in to the multiplayer
2. Download the patch
3. Click "ok"
4. Get frustrated and go to civfanatics.com... Then pray for help

Checked the "Patch & Update" section under Civ4 at the top of the page,
and on the download page of patch 174, you can see a lot of people commenting that it f*d their game up, so I didn't feel like downloading it from there without any further help.

Is their no 100% safe way to download and install this patch today?
I'm starting to think buying Civ5 is the only way I'll ever play civilization online again xD

Loaded Civ 4 on new computer. Ran without problem. downloaded patch 1.74 and now only get error message "Cannot find D4DX9_32.dll" Have tried to remove whole patch and all of Civ 4 to no avail. How do I get all off so I can start from scratch?
