Disappointing that they haven't released it yet, the changes aren't that big.... so NAY

Telling us that the patch will be out next week and then not following up on why it isn;t released as soon as it was implied to be released is really just a shockingly bad decision.

By all means, point to where they said the patch would be out last week.

Bh

I have to agree that Alexman did in fact say it would be out last week.

The week before last a post was made towards the end of the week saying that - we can't quite release it this week, so it will have to be next week. Words to that effect.

I can't be bothered to go hunt for it, but I definitely read it.

However, that said, I still don't care about waiting longer. Patience is a virtue, civ is still playable for 99% of people, everybody just kick back and relax and all will be well! ;)

No, all he said was that they had hoped to release it on the 14th (he didn't say the 14th, but that Friday), but that they weren't able to do so. A lot of people then made the faulty assumption that that meant it would be released last week. But he certainly never said anything about that happening.

He has, however, said something about it being released early this coming week. Hopefully that'll turn out to be true.

Bh

You are right - it doesn't specifically state "next week"... but it definitely implies it. People can be forgiven for assuming that the words...

"We are done with the patch, but unfortunately we will not be able to release it this week as we had hoped." September 14 (my bold)

.... clearly state that it is ready and imply that it just didn't quite make distribution that week thereby implying its imminent arrival.

I do perfectly appreciate the fact that it's not Firaxis who are responsible for scheduling releases even of patches, but some updated news would stop threads like this one from happening.

For the record, I don't care if it takes months! ;)

Oh, I agree that they could have mentioned it when the the new bugs were found, and they realized that it'd take them longer. On the other hand, I'd rather they focused on fixing the new bugs rather than coming here to post.

And I "care" if it takes months, but at the same time, not really. Basically, yes, I want the patch. I'd like it as quickly as possible. But I'm not going to be impatient about it, I'll wait as long as necessary for it to come out.

It takes 5 minutes, tops, to inform the community that further bugs have been found delaying the release for possibly 2-3 weeks. Instead, they completely ignore the community which buys the game.

If you treat the community like trash, they are much less likely to support your products.

"treating like trash" is a really melodramatic way of saying "not having informed". Can you imagine speaking to people like that in real life who have, for all intents and purposes, done you no harm? :D

I personally think that companies which keep their customer's well informed are doing themselves a good service.

It is, however, not obligatory.

You bought the game, you have a working product, this patch is a value adding pack brought to you at no extra cost.

Some of the additions *are* fixes, I agree.... but would you rather just have a couple of bug fixes or all this additional, user-feedback based gameplay improvements that they've added?

Really, the biggest problem with games is that the custom base tends to be teens with little true understanding of business and who are prepared to make anonymous loud and ugly demands over what amounts to minor issues - not referring to anyone here, but just in general.

If you seriously do have a problem with the service, write a professional letter to them (that would be the publisher though, not the developer) outlining your grievances and they will be obliged to write back to inform you.

I didn't read the thread, too lazy.

All in all, they COULD give us information what's going on, culdn't they?

That's ths point.

I wait another month GLADLY, if I can be a) sure to get it then, and b) get a lot of fixes and gameplay-enhancements for it.

Ok, you seem to be lacking an understanding of how game companies work. Believe it or not, Firaxis makes absolutely no money from "the community". Firaxis gets paid by Take Two. So whether you or I buy the game doesn't impact them directly - in fact, they got paid for the game before we even had the option to buy it (yes, purists out there will note that some companies get royalties based on sales, but that generally isn't the majority of their income). So if you want to complain about someone, complain about Take Two. They are the ones who you bought the game from. They also, conveniently, are the ones who are in control of the release schedule for the patch. So if you want to complain about someone not keeping you in the loop, that's your target.

Firaxis, on the other hand, has no control over the patch, and isn't going to see any extra money based on it. So any communication they give us about it is out of the kindness of their hearts. When we see just how much crap they get when they do post (I refer you to all the bile directed Alex's way over the post he made), I'm not surprised in the slightest when he doesn't come back for a follow up. There's a good reason, I'm sure, why he posted the lastest news on Apolyton instead of here - over there, he doesn't get vilified if people's assumptions about his posts don't turn out to be true.

Actually, even some of the comments over there were a little off the mark....

I draw your attention back to my point: a significant percentage of games players (especially ones on fan forums) are teenagers without any experience of how actual business works, yet who anonymously mouth off as if they know what's going on and as if mouthing off is the way to achieve something in business.

That is the nature of the beast.

Well put! ...

Maybe its just me, but a 1-2 line post telling us that it has been delayed and giving a revised estimate of release (eg it's a month away) would stop 95% of complaints directed towards Firaxis/Take2.

If they bug-tested it before announcing the changes, we wouldn't have this problem now.

You're right. We would have a different one. Or, have you forgotten all the "when is the official patch" hub-bub that was going on before Alexman's poll?

Firaxis is owned by Take2. They are one company. This is a distinction without a difference.

And so the merriment continues. I haven't voted on this thread for the same reason I haven't voted on the earlier thread detailing 3.13s fixes: I don't have the patch yet, and so I don't know if the wait is worth it.

Is this poll not simply another way of saying: "Are we waiting too long, yes or no?"

My sentiments echo Bhruic's pretty much exactly, so I won't repeat the same points. Furthermore, I suspect that as soon as the new patch is released a lot of the tensions will ease in the forums, and will be very surprised if sales of Civ5 or any future Firaxis/2K products are negatively impacted by this affair.

Spearthrower makes an excellent point: If you wish to be heard, write a professional letter to Take2 (their address for your local area is contained in the Civ4 manual).

As for myself, I will await the patch which is apparently being released early this week.

It should be out early next week. We had to go back and fix a couple of new bugs we introduced.

what, like that? (posted 23/9)
