I am just curious about this.... my husband downloaded the patch and really likes the way things run so smoothly, but when I play (and of course I have a certain way I like to play) I find it REALLY annoying because the Great Lighthouse no longer works (you still get the extra move, but can not go into ocean squares) and the tech advances now take longer. Is anyone else having this problem.. or am I doing something wrong that this would happen? Thanks for any help!

Well first, the Great Lighthouse never let your Galleys go across ocean squares, just sea squares, and had no affect on which squares any other ships could go through.

On the 1.17 patch, there have been many complaints and threads on this. The AI's trading techniques were changed significantly for this patch, and most people would say it was a change for the worse. All AI civs trade techs and maps amongst themselves liberally and for almost nothing in return, and all snub the human player. It makes the game basically all AI civs versus the one human civ. It is still possible to play by putting your economy 100% toward money and buying the techs from the AI for the outrageous amounts they demand and giving in to all their threats, but many people (including myself) have uninstalled the game and reinstalled it along with the 1.16 patch so we don't have to play this way. Firaxis has acknowledged the problems with the 1.17 patch and said they are working on another one.

Not true. The 1.07 version had the Lighthouse give the ability to traverse all water squares including oceans to galleys even though the civilopedia said otherwise.

You could go through ocean squares in the original version, however this was taken out in later patches. 'Twas never meant to be.

Look at the 'fixes' list on the civ site.

Just adapt to whatever is changed in the patches.

I am guessing that you had the game completly unpatched before hand. The original game had a bug with the Great Lighthouse, as you were not supposed to get movement into ocean squares. This was fixed in the 1.16f patch

The 1.16f patch also changed the max research time to 40 turns. And each patch has tweaked the research times, primarily increasing the cost of later techs, which is what I believe you are seeing. However, also once the game gets going the tech advances tend to come real quick, since the AI likes trading them alot now and their cost is partially dependent on the number of other civ's that have that tech.

The ONLY reason I have not dumped patch 1.17 and gone back to 1.16 is the stacked movement feature. Without it, Modern Warfare is too tedious to play. I still might dump 1.17 for the reasons discussed at great length on this and the Apolyton forums.

Maybe someday Firaxis will get it right. Perhaps Patch 1.99?
