Patch problem?

I recently downloaded and bought the game from gamespot.com. So I don't have the actual cd and box, ect. When I try to install the patches it says I don't have a previous version of civilization 4 installed. I looked in the files and they're all in the right spot, to me at least. Though the civilization 4 folder doesn't have much in it. It is all in the civilization IV folder. What should I do to fix this? I can play the game fine, just I can't play online because of this patch problem. Can anyone help?

2K's support says you have to download the patch from where you bought it. Gamespot leads you to the Civ IV site, which is the wrong patch. Can anyone help?
