i have installed patch on win98 and did not have any crashes yet. I did notice the following problems that people are reporting here...
1) Relationship lines in the diplomacy screens disappeared after pressing a couple of Fkeys.
2) The military screen crossbar that shows were the units are also disappeared
3) Including the crossbar in the cultural advisor screen that shows location of cities.
4) the F7 screen (wonders screen) shows the outline of the city names box which is very annoying.
5) The population numbers have been changed to make it have a 3D effect. Well. IMHO, it doesnt look good at all and is a bit hard to read. I prefer the plain, readable, old format.
6) The addition of police stations only have a very slight effect in eliminating corruption. In my games, it's more like <10% improvement.
TO FIRAXIS:
I HOPE YOU READ THIS NOTE. IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD SERIOUSLY CONSIDER DROPPING YOUR TESTING PARTNER AND GET A CONTRACT WITH SOMEONE ELSE. OBVIOUSLY, YOUR TESTING LABORATORIES ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB AT ALL.
I MEAN THIS SORT OF PROBLEMS (VISUAL PROBLEMS) SHOULD HAVE BEEN VERY EASY TO DETECT. I NOTICED IT IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES PLAYING THE GAME. THIS IS THE SORT OF THING THAT WILL HURT THE COMPANY IMAGE AND SALES.
I agree with Thunderfall, testers should be picked from the forums, and not just the best ones. They would be good for testing the higher difficulty levels, then there should also be a group of "intermediate" players for the medium difficulty levels and last but not least there should also be a group of newbies and lesser players involved. If this could be achieved for let's say an expansion pack or civ4 (or maybe even the next patch) then the patches, etc; might not come as fast, but at least a large number of obvious bugs could have been resolved before releasing the game (and the patch). It's great that people from Firaxis participate in the forums so a logical conclusion should be that they let the people from the forums participate in the creation (or at least testing) of the game and the patches.
BTW, is there already a date set for the new patch?
If so, delay it for a week, and distribute it amongst a selected group of civ-players for an ultimate test (cheaper than test-lab and surely better results!), if that passes,... then you could release the patch with more certainty that the chance for additional bugs would be very small.
Ok . I can play the game All I want as long as I have no patch installed. The new or the old version. Either one simply will not allow my game to start. XP machine. reinstall no patch I guess I will be stuck with the original buggy crap. And it would seem to me that no matter how signifigant the chane in the patch there will be no need to resubmitt it, because obviously the people who it is being submitted too, have not a frigging clue of what they are doing. This is one of maybe 2-3 times I have ever seen a patched patch come out in one day and still not work...... And most other Game companies release 90% of their beta patch testing to their publics. They know we test the games better than they ever could. Look at UT and Q3 ya know. Thats just 2 big ones right off the top of my head.
I'm still downloading the patch....the much awaited patch
yet i saw so many negitive remarks tat make me have 2nd thoughts.....
so should i wait or install it???
my dear....it's so problematic
i don remember Civ 1 or Civ 2 having so much problems...
or is it i din know there a bug in the previous 2??
anyway....i do hope the people who r designing the game read what we post here....
about the beta tester.....i'm quite sure everyone here would gladly test the game for them free of charge......
so why not use us??
pls ask ur beta tester to wake up.....or pack up....
maybe i go flip a coin to decide if i should install the patch.....
Joke for the day.....
Do you know why they release the patch on Friday?
So they can just go home have a GOOD weekend and come back on monday to find their email flooded with fault user found and deal with all the problems the patch created.
 This is just crazy, all these problems and complaints. Serioully Fraxis make the beta testing open online and allow the users like US to send the bug reports!
I mean hell we work for free and you stand a better chance of getting things actually FIXED.
We beg of you!
When the time spent fixing a game and playing approach the same value, the game's inegrity looses its FUN factor each time I go to the web site and discover "compatability issues," "crashing," and other things.
Firaxsis is really, really dropping the ball on this one.
Oh well, I guess I can try to do another multiplayer game of Civ II.
I agree I am just glad I have Civ2 still installed, I guess its back to the old "Non Crashing days" where things where stable and you could actually kill sea units with planes, and land fights are actually calculated.
Yea I mean Civ2 may not have any fancy graphics, but Civ3 isnt exactly busting the barriers of the 2002 era of graphics itself.
I think so many games set such low standards to where certain great games dont feel they have to improve by much. I mean it might be a great game if they didnt alter the already perfect battle system.
Not to mention I havent seen so many bugs in a product in my life. Maybe Fraxis should have tested alot more, and maybe ASKED users what we wanted changed, instead of doing it all on there own. The game was playable before but after the patch (and the other patch) the game crashed all the time and never was stable, whats going on Fraxis? I am starting to get sad over here.
If you ask me the game was better before the patch, and thats an even more sad thing to say.
