Has anyone got the patch working with Win2k?

When I try to run it, it asks for admin priviliges, which I don't want to give and didn't need to give before. I've since read (on blue's) that the patch is for Win9x only. I've only just downloaded it (soon after 12 midnight, GMT) so it should be the newer patch.

Do I have to reinstall and what for the Win2k/XP patch?

Admin privileges are only for YOU, not for the game.

Its trying to write to the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for its new values, and if you're a "normal" user on a Win2K machine, you don't have permissions to do that.

Yeah, I got that (I didn't word my post well) - don't kow about the registry bit. Is there a different patch for Win2k/XP users?

I've read though the Download the patch thread and I still don't have a clue what's going on - is this patch for Win9x only?

What should I download to get the patch working with Win2k?

I have the newer patch. I uninstalled it (different Add/Remove programs entry to CivIII, handy). Civ3.com doesn't say that it's not for Win2k/XP users.

The 1.16f patch worked just dandy on my Win2K machine when I installed it as Administrator. Like some of the previous posters mentioned, you need to install the patch as a user with administrative rights. This means you need to either sign in as Administrator, or promote your account to the administrator group (not recommended).

Installing software with an administrative account, preferably Administrator, should be done as common practice. Bear in mind there are a few packages that won't work right doing this (ICQ comes straight to mind) but those packages are usually not quite up to date with what Windows 2000 and XP have to offer in the way of a secure, multiple-account heirarchy.

Ohhh...

I installed as Power User, not admin (I use Power user all the time unless I need to be in as admin - Linux habits die hard). I'll try again as admin. Thanks.

UPDATE:

I just logged in as Admin and installed it - it still failed as Power User.

I went back and completely unstalled Civ III. Upon reinstalling and patching, it works perfectly. Thanks!
