I feel like a complete newbie having to ask this, but what is the DIRECT path to republic in multiplayer?

I know that when i do not play against someone, but i use multiplayer game (so i play the AI), i will always get the direct path which is: alph, writing, code, lit, Republic. without any tech before or in between.

In MP this even when i dont get any start techs or techs from huts, this tech path will not work. whatever i try, i can not research literacy without researching a useless tech first.

any of you have the same problem? and does first horseback riding development make the tech path working? because horseback riding first would still be acceptable.

The first tech I go for is always Horseback Riding. Think about it. They have a movement of 2 so they can go explore early on and find the goody huts. The last game I played I had like 20-25 techs by the time it was 3000BC (50 turns). After Horseback Riding, I go for Republic, that is, if I don't stumble across it in my exploring!

A false economy Mr Squirrel (btw, what happened to the other 2003?

). One horseman is the same production as 2 warriors. But each time you move your horse onto a square that needs both MP, you could have moved both warriors one square that turn. So the warriors will cover more ground over an extended period. Also, they can go in different directions, so making it more likely that you will find any neighbouring civs before they get uppity.

But I'm impressed by your tech finding abilities - there must have been a huge number of huts around in that game!

True Supernaut. But two units = two shields, meaning i have one less to make a settler, which is what i make after a defender and a horseman. this settler irrigates, mines, roads, and finds new cities. So after maybe 10-15 turns, i have 3-4 cities, all sizes 1-3, and the other players have only one city size 2, and they have half as many techs as me.

and you said what happened to the other 2003? they all graduate HS before me.

Squirrel2004 sez: "two units = two shields"

Not so. Under despotism, you get free units up to the size of the city; size 2 city gets 2 free units. Also, you have to discover horseback riding first before building horses, which slows you down several turns before building any units. ALSO, 2 Warriors are twice as hard to attack and kill as 1 Horse.

I think your numbers are screwy. After 10 turns you should have just discovered Horseback Riding (unless you have a good resource square, like whales), and what were you building in the meantime?

Horseback Riding is important tech, but it's more important to get to Monarchy or Republic ASAP! Skip Horseback Riding AND Bronze Working and go straight for better gov't. And skip the early defender, ye gods!

Though I play SP, not MP... Assuming there is no change in the Civ II algorithm about how/what a hut can yield in SP vs. MP, I find it *astounding* that anyone could discover "20-25 techs" using horsemen presumably built after researching Horseback Riding, then producing the horsemen.

There is a pattern to the huts, and a limit to them as a consequence. I will probably run a test case sometime in the future, using nothing but grassland, and see if such a feat is doable. Mathematically, at first glance, it seems highly unlikely because of the nature of the Civ II programming.

There are 87 advances in the game. At that rate of advancement ("20-25" by 3000 BC), you probably aren't able to complete your own current research for dozens of game turns, either.

I have a question (please, no one but Squirrel2004 answer this)... what is the best tech a goodie hut has given you after you discovered Invention?

Anyway, "20-25" techs from huts by 50 game turns is quite impressive, at least to me. Of curiosity, what size map was it?
