Is there a thread somewhere that is essentially "Getting Started--for dummies" ? I've never played any of the Civ games. I just got a used Civ III version and am not sure if there is supposed to be a manual of any kind or not; I don't have one, at any rate. I don't understand how to get started. At all.

There does exist a game manual. Civ III has a tutorial version. You might want to see these articles also.

huh, I never realized that, the first time I played, I had my settler run around, not realizing how to build a city, and I never realized until weeks after I got the game that you can double click on a city to open the city screen. But that was years ago

You can also click on the "Civilopedia" icon on the screen to view files in game.

Hmmm, I just picked up a copy of Civ3 complete from I think Best Buy that still has that lovely hard copy manual, which is nice to refer to when playing the game.

If you have the hard manual, read the gameplay section. They included a little early gameplay.

He doesn't.

Oh, stupid me.

Welcome,

My suggestion for getting started is go to the Civ3 menu on this website, under Reference you'll find reference files, they include keyboard shortcuts, work your way thru them.

Its quite a learning curve for this game, don't be to ambitious and have fun.

Obviously I'm a fan of the school of hard knocks!

If you have any specific questions please don't hesitate to ask!

Read the manual, if you can find it, but understand it will only give you the mechanics on how to do things. It won't tell you everything.

To really get a grasp of how things work, read through some of the Succession Games. The Always War ones are a specialized subset of the SGs. They do not allow any trading at any time, since you declare war on the first turn you meet a new civ. The ones that are Training SGs are the best, since they are started with the aim to help explain (in detail) the hows and whys of playing the game to relative newcomers of the game.

Thanks for advice about finding the manual on the disk. I also found it on the internet, but, uh, printing a 200+ pdf file is a bit much. :)

I was able to figure out a few things, so I can at least play now. This obviously has a steep learning curve; I really have no idea what I'm doing.

With a few of the basics understood now, does anyone have any other thread suggestions to help out a clueless player?

Thanks!
