If you are a decent player then you know the need - particularly in naval warfare of using units to scout/patrol areas looking for the enemy. I have played many games where I am forced to send out planes in four directions from a major hub at the beginning of every hub. Also the same with destroyers from a carrier task force.
In earlier game you cannot fortify your borders so send a horseman back and forth to alert you of an enemy approaching.
So why not program a "Patrol" function into unit actions? I have seen this in RTS games. Just put it at the beginning of each turn - unit stops when it sees non-allied forces.
Simple and would save a lot of time but take nothing away from the game.
