If you are a decent player then you know the need - particularly in naval warfare of using units to scout/patrol areas looking for the enemy. I have played many games where I am forced to send out planes in four directions from a major hub at the beginning of every hub. Also the same with destroyers from a carrier task force.

In earlier game you cannot fortify your borders so send a horseman back and forth to alert you of an enemy approaching.

So why not program a "Patrol" function into unit actions? I have seen this in RTS games. Just put it at the beginning of each turn - unit stops when it sees non-allied forces.

Simple and would save a lot of time but take nothing away from the game.

Would be a nice feature but I think aircraft should just move back to base but remove the fog of war for the tiles it patroled.

I disagree, fortify gives an extra range of view and works quite well. Only the fighter type unit has a recon abillity. I diasagree because a unit would have to have an auto-move. After it wanders around fro 5 years (for example) it shouldn't get a sudden patrol bonus. The extra view on fortifie/sentry already does this extra view.

Maybe whenever you press the patrol button on a Patrol unit, you would have to select some squares in which this unit would patrol, that way you could cover a border, without having to move the unit back and forth urself.

It does? This is news to me.

i like the idea of being able to set patrol areas. However, something would need to be done with the order of units. At the moment, auto moves are done last and the patrol would be an auto move. It does not make sense for your patrol to move after your units.

As I said, Patrol would have to be a first move rather than last. Current automoves are last either change that or have two forms of auto moves - it is just programming.

Yes - a patrol button would require that you place your cursor on the furthest point from the current one to patrol. Even better would be to be allowed to establish the two or more points of a patrol without having to be limited to current position.

This can be done - it already is done in other games.

One or two extra points of vision does not equate to a patrol.

Well for a patrol to work effectively, it would basicly be programed to walk between two or three or maybe five flags, like in Age of Empires, I guess.

I was disagreeing with the free "unfogged for sitting on ash" patrol thing.

And yes, SealMan , from your sarcasm I stand corrected, that only applies to naval units.
