PBEM Game Concept -- Tag Teams

RoP Rape is when you sign a Right of Passage and surround the enemies cities with Stacks of Doom and procede to destroy them in one turn.

Oh, yes, I am committed to playing, though I may not get my randomly-generated map. :)

Yeah, I agree, violating RoP is definitely a dirty tactic.

Actually I agree with the map idea...

If you make the map... Then you know the map...
Unfair advantage and I'm sure you want a level playing field...

Why not ask someone like Col to make us a map with four continents, and random resources...

With that many islands they will be spread good enough anyway...

Melifluous

I actually agree with you Meli!

Of course, who knows if he wants to make the level. Hopefully he will :)

The intent behind the even distribution of resources is to put each team on a level playing field. My knowing the map wouldn't be an advantage because it's just going to be evenly spaced continents with one in the middle. If the resources are fairly distributed and the starting locations are unassigned, what other advantage is there?

Anyway, I'm willing to compromise. :D If someone else wants to ask a third party to generate a map, that's fine. I'm still pretty firm about the distribution of resources outlined in the first post of the thread, however. If all of that works for everyone, I could load the map as a scenario and start the game from there, right?

Ok - mel just messaged me.

It is a huge advantage knowing the map for any player. It determines a large piece of your strategy and allows you to make contact with other civs at will.

If you want I can produce a few random maps and pick one that satisfies your criteria.

You'll need to spell out what you want -
players, countries, order
continents, water
barbs
climate etc

What distribution of resources is acceptable? Is random OK? I dont have time to create an artificial map so I wont know all the resources at start time. The only way of doing that is to create the map by hand.

Ok - killer has leaned on me to create a random map with resources enevnly distribued.

Leave this one with me and I'll see what i can do this evening

*whispers in Col's ear* Put 5 different luxuries near my capitol; I'll make it worth your while. J/K.

Yeah, thanks, Col! :)

@col - Thanks in advance for your willingness to help. :goodjob: The general concepts for the game are outlined in the first post in this thread. Specifically:

- continents large enough for two civs (one team), with each civ having room for a ring of 5-7 cities. The starting locations should be equal and unassigned (i.e., to allow random assignment).

- every continent will have two iron, two horses, two coal, two rubber, two saltpeter, ONE oil, ONE aluminum, and ONE uranium (am I missing any?)

- every continent will have a monopoly on two luxuries (to encourage trade)

- there will be one open continent in the middle of the map that has two each of oil, aluminum, and uranium, plus one of each luxury

- the game will be played with PTW, no barbs, all victory conditions, no culturally linked starts, and with culture flips

I know this requires some effort/amendment of a random generated map. That's why I was willing to take it on. I had no intent of gaining an advantage in the game. Heck, if it makes everyone happy, I'll generate, edit, and post the complete map before we start the game. That leads to . . .

@everyone - This game is not intended to be a plain ol' generic game of Civ3. If that were the case, I would have posted a request for 4-5 individuals willing to play, would have generated a random map, and we'd already be underway. Instead, I wanted to try a game whereby two people who don't really know each other have to work cooperatively against other human teams. Variant games like this require special rules, maps, resource distribution, etc. The detailed rules and even resources distribution were intended to simplify the game, not complicate it. The intent was to allow each team even footing to produce whatever units they want and to get into a position to begin putting their strategy (peaceful or bloody) into effect with more of a focus on diplomacy and tactics and less of an emphasis on having to go search for/acquire resources. The teamwork side of the game will be difficult enough with even resources and would likely bog everything down :cringe: with randomness thrown in.

I hope y'all can see where I'm coming from. If this concept is not attractive to you, then we either need to keep discussing/refining it or scrap the whole thing. :suicide: I hope we can stick with the game and make it work. :D

edit: clarified the map parameters for col, who has no idea what he's allowed you guys to drag him into :crazyeye:

Frankly, I don't understand why this tag-team PBEM requires special rules as outlined, but I'm willing to play along. I'll be seeing you guys around 2000 hours EST, for I need to go to work now.

DogBoy needs to pick his Civ. Some other people need to define their Time Zone for Reagan's and Col's benefit. Yes, I and Reagan are uncultured Americans who are unfamiliar with world geography, please forgive us that. My guess is that Sashaddin is in EST, while Melifluous is in GMT.

col will mail me the game when he has started it, that way only HE has the bix and the admin password. I will then mail it on. PLEASE: everyone load from multiplayer screen foirst time and choose difficulty as regent before you do. Otherwise, the game goes chieftain :(

OK, I will post a player list here and col sets up the game now:

Killer - Scandinavia, CET, geology_henry@gmx.net
meli, Celts, GMT
WF444, Carthage, GMT
Sashaddin, China, unknown
Myzenium, Greece, US
Isildurs Heir, random, US
dogboy, ???? random now, US
reagan, Otoomans, US

Most of what you wanted is there - resources and luxuries should be as you wanted. I checked by eye that everyone has everything on the list and two luxuries per continent. Sorry if i goofed. Its possible you may have an extra something somewhere.

There is NO central continent but there are islands with random goodies to be found.

This isnt exactly as you envisaged, Reagan, but I worked with the first map that looked promising - and it took over thirty random maps to find one that I could work with. I hope thats Ok. Besides you dont really WANT to know where to find stuff.

The continents are nowhere near identical - but they look comparable to my eye. No-one has a terrible start - but some are better than others. The map is a natural one - so no nice regular continents.

I've made it so you can meet up without suicide galleys. ;)

Should be a fun game. Enjoy.

Killer has the save and is playing.

I just got home from work and see this thread has GROWN! Hope I'm not too late to pick a civ. If you choose random for me, that's fine. If I get to pick, I want to be Ottomans, France, Persia, Carthage in that order. Thanks.

Thank you, col, for your efforts!

Did I miss something, or did the game I suggested and organized get stood on its head whereby I am going last and someone else has taken over? :saiyan:
