There are very few original ideas in this world, so if this has been suggested/played before, I'm not trying to take credit for it. Anyway, I've wanted to try a PBEM game for little while and have thought of a concept that might be fun to try. How about a game where there are eight human civs who have to pair up and operate in tandem? Here are the rules:

- a team may never attack each other's cities/units

- a team must declare war simultaneously and must form an alliance with each other after declaring war. I assume that ending the war prior to the end of the alliance will result in a rep hit that the AI will remember during future negotiations.

- if your teammate is attacked, you must declare war against the offending team. You do not have to form an alliance with your teammate but you both must make peace contemporaneously. In other words, both members of a team must be in the same state of war/peace with all opposing civs.

- no trading of cities is allowed

- all victory conditions will be enabled, with both members of the team getting credit for a victory by one member of the team. This should make it clear that this game is intended to be a cooperative venture between the teammates.

- play on continents, with two humans on a continent (forming one team), with room for approximately one ring of cities for each civ

- every continent will have two iron, two horses, two coal, two rubber, two saltpeter, ONE oil, ONE aluminum, and ONE uranium (am I missing any?)

- every continent will have a monopoly on two luxuries (to encourage trade)

- there will be one open continent in the middle of the map that has two each of oil, aluminum, and uranium, plus one of each luxury

I will use the editor to generate a map, place the resources/luxuries, and set fair starting positions (i.e., make sure everyone has an equal start). The starting positions will not be assigned, so I will have no idea where I'm starting and, thus, have no incentive to make any continent better than another.

This game will be played with PTW, no barbs, all victory conditions, no culturally linked starts, and with culture flips. We will play by honorable rules (no RoP rape, must declare war from outside an opposing civ's borders, no culture pushing, no breaking a trade deal to declare war, etc.).

These are just some starter thoughts. Any proposals for other rules are welcome.

Please post one final confirming message if you have committed to playing the game. Include your time zone in your message so I can best position the turn order. The players are:

DogBoy - unknown civ, Pacific US time zone, unconfirmed
Isildurs Heir - random civ, Pacific US time zone, unconfirmed
Myzenium - Greeks, Eastern US time zone, confirmed
Sashaddin - China, unknown time zone, confirmed
Lt. 'Killer' M - Vikes, unknown time zone, confirmed
WildFire444 - Carthage, unknown time zone, confirmed
Melifluous - Celts, unknown time zone, confirmed

I have tried this idea about a month ago, called 2v2 war. The basic concept was as soon as you meet someone you ally them and they are your partner the rest of the game. The other two people would then be allies. You could trade techs, maps, luxuries, etc... with your ally. Sadly though, like so many other PBEM games, you go a few turns and them somebody doesn't check their e-mail for weeks, if ever. But I would like to try again so sign me up. gkrgreene@earthlink.net

Seems like this would be fun. :) I suppose Reagan will choose my partner for this PBEM, right?

How about at least 4 AI Civs?

Make me the leader of the Greeks, if you please.

So, DogBoy and Reagan, which Civs are yours?

If we get one more person, we can have three teams of two, with four AI on a large pangea map. The first person you meet will be your teammate. If the first person(s) you meet has already met someone, there's a truce until you meet your teammate. How's that sound?

I really cant play with out you huh Killer? :p

And what do you mean 'no culture pushing'? You kind of have no control over expanding and pushing someone elses culture.

WF: what he means is founding cities 2 tiles off around an enemy city with the intent to flip it.

like this:

0-0-0-0-0-E
0-E-E-E-E-E
0-E-C-E-E-E
0-E-E-E-E-E
0-0-0-0-0-E

C is the city, E is enemy influence, 0 is open land. You now go and found like this:

0-Y-0-Y-0-E
0-E-E-E-E-E
Y-E-C-E-E-E
0-E-E-E-E-E
Y-0-Y-0-Y-E

to flip.

or use towns to push borders that 1 tile that gets you into arty range the same turn. Or use ROP rape and settlers to push the border back.....

One down, one to go. Sashaddin wants China. DogBoy and Killer need to pick. I'll take the Ottomans, by the way.

My interpretation of a culture push is when, during peace, you build a new city that intentionally overlaps a rival civ's existing city, thus taking away one or more squares of the other guy's turf. Once war has been declared honorably, anything goes, subject to the teammate rules in the first post.

Is Scandinavia still free?

reagan: what you describe is usually called 'aggressive settling' IIRC to distinguish it from the ROP rape get-artillery-into-range thing.......

Fair 'nuff, Killer. All of the tactics (they're not "exploits" against human civs, right?) described in our recent messages are prohibited. Are there any other honorable rules we need to discuss?

The Vikes (who I strongly considered) and Celts are yours, gentlemen. It looks like we now have eight players. I will modify the first post in this thread with all of the rules and we can discuss/refine them the rest of today. I'll try to edit the map (and hopefully start the game) tonight, so speak now about the rules or forever hold your peace. :D

reagan: rules:

- ROP rape with anything you want, but NOT settlers. This rule is NOT in effect for settler you nring into the enemy lands AFTER declaration of war, naturally.

- no 'cheaters deals' - i.e. sign deals and break them right away (per turn for tech). This should be shunned anyways.......

- fair barb reports and so on: report things people miss because of the missing inter-turn report in email or thread. Otherwise, a unit might be killed and you never know if it was a fast enemy or a barb horseman.....

  • Strategic Resources are evenly distributed among the teams.
  • Only one team occupies a continent at the beginning.
  • There will be plenty of Luxury Resources for all.

While you're at it, Reagan, why don't you make each continent identical?

Seriously, I'd prefer a randomly-generated map. I like having some unknowns in a game of Civ3. The following parameters would suit me.

  • Continents
  • Normal climate
  • Planet of 4 billion years
  • Temperate
  • Standard or Large map

BTW, what is RoP rape?
