This is a thread to organise a PBEM for UK civvers commencing sometime on Friday 4th November (after work for me). This way we can play our first game online without hardened 1-week veterans spoiling things. Since we don't have the game yet I'm unsure as to the exact details we need to figure out but signing up participants would obviously be a start.

Back to work! I'll dip in later.

EDIT:

Here's the procedure:

1) Post when you have the game up and running and are ready to play. Include your chosen Civ and leader and your in-game nickname.

e.g. Enkidu Warrior is ready to go
In-game name: Oukan
Civ: Japan
Leader: Tokugawa

2) Wait for the next 3 or so players then swap e-mail addresses via PM or e-mailing via public profile.

3) Choose game settings. Password protect the game so nobody can cheat.

4) Start playing - I'd suggest manually e-mailing the save file to avoid reported problems with the in-game system. I'll have to do this since my Civ 4 comp is not connected to the net.

5) Post in this thread to let people know how it's going.

6) If you don't get in the first game then feel free to post that you are up and running and wait for other players to join you for a second game.

Count me in mate. We def need to sort something out.

Im up for a go later on too whenever theres space.

Im happy for an email game if anyones up for it when everything is loaded and sorted.

BTW, whats PBEM again?

I think we should put in Viper, Hentooth and pdathert as reserves, its more than likely that at least one of us will be unable to get Civ4 working, but I really hope not.

Agreed. And I have a sneaky feeling that gonna be me!!!! Damn! I am feeling really bad now!!! Finger crossed....

My copy of Civ4 is in the post right now, coming all the way from Jersey, to the dreary city of Manchester. Shame it wasn't released a week earlier, so I could've had study week to play it though.:crazyeye:

Anyway, can I put my name down as the 6th reserve or whatever it's up to now?:D

8 players on PBEM will be sloooooooowwwwww. Might I suggest we go with about 4 players on several games so that everyone who wants in can get a game going. Rather than setting things up now I suggest we just post on Friday/Saturday as soon as we are up and running then get going when about 4 people are ready. The next 4 can use the same thread to arrange the next game.

I've never played Civ multiplayer either and none of us will have played Civ IV so don't anyone worry about being annihilated - it's just about getting used to the game alongside other new players who have been kept waiting as long as you.

So as long as you all agree, procedure is:

1)Post when you have the game and are ready to play

2)Wait until there are around 4 players all ready

3)Figure out the technical details and get things underway!

4)Don't forget to post on how it went!

All things being well I should be up and running at 7pm on Friday. I look forward to meeting you in Civ IV.

I can't for the life of me decide which leader to go with.

That sounds like a plan. I aim to be there ready and prepared!

I've been reading up about PBEM on this forum and have gleaned some of the technical details. Whoever gets up and running first can be the host. The next 3 people need to e-mail the host with:
Nickname
Chosen civ and leader (first come first served - no reserving until you are ready to play!)
e-mail address
in-game password

There seems to be a problem with the in-game e-mail system so we'll have to manually e-mail the save when we are finished (I would have to do this anyway). The host should set up a game with the correct civs and with passwords activated, with agreed map settings (probably a small-ish random map at fast speed). They then e-mail the save along with the e-mail addresses of all players to the next person in line, and so on.

I'm sure we'll have our share of technical hitches, but then it can't be helped. I'd encourage everyone to read some of the other threads on this part of the forum for further info on PBEM.
