PBEM: Neglected UK players - first multiplayer game

I've been reading up about PBEM on this forum and have gleaned some of the technical details. Whoever gets up and running first can be the host. The next 3 people need to e-mail the host with:
Nickname
Chosen civ and leader (first come first served - no reserving until you are ready to play!)
e-mail address
in-game password

There seems to be a problem with the in-game e-mail system so we'll have to manually e-mail the save when we are finished (I would have to do this anyway). The host should set up a game with the correct civs and with passwords activated, with agreed map settings (probably a small-ish random map at fast speed). They then e-mail the save along with the e-mail addresses of all players to the next person in line, and so on.

I'm sure we'll have our share of technical hitches, but then it can't be helped. I'd encourage everyone to read some of the other threads on this part of the forum for further info on PBEM.

Oh man, you are an absolute star! Only 2 days to go!

Can I join in too, if there are any slots left? I've never tried Civ MP before...

With regards to the in-game e-mail problems people are having it looks like civ does not work with any web based emails (i.e. hotmail) or any email service that requires you to use a username or password to send mail out.

As a suggestion when setting up the game just use you normal email address but for the STMP server use your isp's.

For example: my email address would be fraser@sfbooker.demon.co.uk but my smtp address would be smpt.wanadoo.co.uk as wanadoo supplies my broadband connection.

Apologies in advance if I have confused anyone. Just post here or send me a pm if you want anything cleared up

8 players on PBEM will be sloooooooowwwwww.

<snip>

I've never played Civ multiplayer either

If you've never played MP Civ how do you know 8 players will be slow for PBEM? I smell a rat ;)

It just seems self-evident that taking one turn then waiting for the game to be e-mailed around 7 other people will be too slow a process for our first multiplayer game. Like I said, this is for discovering the game alongside other neglected UK players, not stomping to victory or playing an endless epic game.

I've updated my first post with the suggested ground rules. Feel free to suggest ammendments. I'll be up and running about 7pm tommorow - look forward to joining you all.

Sounds like a plan. Is your profession an event organiser or something... You are 1 hell of an organised person... I am starting to profiling you as someone who play civ4 to the n-degrees of meticulous details... hmm.. tough opponent.....

I got mine today. it was released early in most stores other than Game. I'm really enjoying it, wierd game but great at same time.

As for this multiplayer, is there a way for me to be England in it starting on England? If so, I'm there! I'm great as an isolated isle.

Well that's me up and running (even after all the ati problems), won't be able to start anything till monday as I am away most weekends.

So if there is any space in one of the games on monday I'll join then.

Can't wait till 5pm... Then I'll kow if I got it...

Well, everything seems to be up and running and going more or less smoothly so far, so I guess I'm ready too. (No sign of the memory leak - yet - but the tooltips are very erratic in the foreign advisor and technology screens)

In Game Name: Scowler
Civ: India
Leader: Gandhi

What settings/difficulty are we going to be using?

I'll just have to choose a civ with the organised trait then! Although I hear it's not the best  . I've never played multiplayer and never played Civ in any competitive sense at all.

Glad to see we have some people ready to go. Wish I didn't have to work  . My copy of Civ 4 is sat on my desk. I should have brought my laptop in and hidden it under the desk  .

Just got back from work found that i have a parcel to collect and the post collection is closed! So I not gonna get my civ4 until tommorrow morning... :(

I've never played Civ multiplayer as well and don't really know what to expect. But I know it will be GREAT!!!!!:goodjob:

I have just installed CivIV but everything seems to go very slowly! (seems to be some sort of memory leak). So I think I am ready to go! :)
In Game Name: Viper
Civ: Arabs
Leader: Saladin :nuke:
Difficulty: Noble?

After considerable delay I am now ready to go.

In game name: Enkidu
Civ: Greece
Leader: Alexander

Since that makes 4 of us, can Scowler, BeefBayford and Viper1812 send their e-mail addresses to me via private message or by e-mailing me through my public profile.

If there are no objections, I'll create a game on a small continents map with all the other options on default as soon as you have all contacted me.

EDIT: Only one player has contacted me. Any others out there ready to play?
EDIT2: Make that 2. One more needed!
EDIT3: That's everyone. I'm setting up now.

The game is up and running!
The first save has been sent. I look forward to letting you know how things are going. I hope those who didn't manage to join this game succeed in setting up their own. If you get stuck sorting it out just ask.
