I am kind of interesting in knowing more the community of players who visit this forum (technically sub-forum) so that'd be nice if each one of you here could vote so that we can have the figures of the PBEM community for instance or know if other people are interested or, on the other hand, disliked it and why.

Please don't give too many answers. For instance vote only once for the number of games played (that way we know how many we are)

Until now I only played PBEMs on the German Civilization Webring Forum and now I'm waiting that the game I entered here is going on.

Talking about the differences? Well, as I just started to explore Civfanatics I really can't tell you.

But perhaps it's interesting to talk about experiences I've made until now?
The main problem with playing PBEM is the right constellation! You need to have reliable players of course. But if these players are playing in the wrong order you nevertheless can have to face a turnaround for the save of a week or more.
It's very good to have a turnaround of 1 turn per day! But that you only will have if you check out the playing times of every player before the game is started!

I voted for two numerical options as I am in 3 team PBEMs where my involvement tends to go in cycles with me having played turns in two out of 3 of them. Plus another 5 PBEMs (2 here, 2 at GC and 1 at CDZ). I've tended to notice that interest always tends to drop over time as the game progresses although I don't mind as long as it keeps on moving.

I've got 10 on the sheet I keep beside my desk with who I send my next turn to.

2 have been terminated (technical difficulties)

3 I haven't heard beack from in a while (but one might pick up again)

1 has been rolling, but may be sporadic for a few days yet.

3 are rolling nicely (2 to 3 turns a week, one with really robust diplomacy)

1 needing a replacement. I'm going to PM a guy who by rights should have first alternate spot.

i stopped playing for medical reasons, but that is behind me now and i hope to soon get back into a couple PBEM, i do still have one ongoing game that my opponent was nice enough to simply wait for me.

before i was forced to get replacements for all my games i played in several games here, one at apolyton, and a couiple at CDG. the games at CDG almost never moved. some of the games here never moved. but there were a few which moved quite nicely and i really hated i had to give them up.

I have been playing PBEM games as a member of CIV3Players (the ladder) for several months. I find them much more enjoyable than the blood lust war games that the ladder members prefer.

Well, my name is Ludovic and I am a PBEM-aholic.

Wait ! Akots is far worst than me !!

Well I play since late April and I have grown very fond of this type of game and I have organized quite a few. I am always trying to attract new players as well so that the community is dynamic. And I try my best to see that the games I set up (mostly scenarios as they are shorther and full of action) reach their end, even though I am not always successfull.

I don't enact harsh rules for I consider PBEM a pleasure and someone who does not respect the unwritten rules will usually go by himself fairly quickly.

I have a bad reputation for being a traitor (I just wish the players I remained ally with could voice their opinions too) lol !

I also play private PBEMs; this actually means only I play USCW PBEMs with another French guy who rarely comes to these boards. Otherwise I am only here since I did not find it convenient to play at different sites (albeit it could have been nice to meet different players with different play styles).

And for those who wonder if I will still organize PBEMs, I will say Eastern Asia Mod, Philippe II and Spanish Reconquista are nearly ready (I am just waiting for one or two units now) albeit some real testing (not by me this time) will need to be done. So if no pb occurs they should come up between October and November.

Well what concerns me I started to play PBEM games only recently. Right now I am participating only in 4 games and I am still to finish at least one. I think I will never play more than 5 or 6 games at the same time since I always try not to only play my turns as soon as possible, but to analyze situation, to think out every decision I make and to predict if possible the moves of my rivals.

I like very active and extended diplomacy this kind of games allows too so I found myself pretty busy even with those 4 games I am currently playing. So in the end I had to choose quality over quantity and I am perfectly happy about it.

Well...I entered a bunch of pbem's. Of course some of them have gone much faster (seafaring comes to mind as does Zero) than others (Pangea, cough, choke). I like diplomatic ones a lot. It allows me to get to know the other players well...which is rather nice since I am--more or less--stuck at home with my illness.

I play PBEMs quite a lot but mostly on CDZ. Main reasons being the games tend to finish instead of stall and the fact that spoilers are written on running games, so you follow other people playing.

I play PBEM games since March and some of them are already finished! ;) Now I'm participating in 10 games, 7 of which are in this forum, 2 in Apolyton and one private game with local friends.

I heavy lurk but may be interested in playing in the future ;) . I enjoy seeing
the strategies used by the better players and Human vs Human usually will
expose any weakness the strategy may have :scan:  .

I've only recently started playing PBEM for Civ, although I've played other strategy games (American Civil War, Steel Panthers) PBEM before, so I'm used to long-running games. I'm currently in Rise of Rome - Zama, and many thanks to Loulong for setting it up! He specifically mentioned that one for PBEM Newbies, so I had to jump in! I'd like to get in maybe one more, not more than that, as I also take a long time thinking about my moves, and am already busy with other Civ games (SGs, Realms Beyond Epic, etc.). I've been looking at CDZ, I like the spoiler thread idea, and besides Akots has challenged me to a 1v1, which I will probably start soon. ;)

I am playing 3 games of CIV conquest. Was playing 4 but one got cancelled becvause people decided that this game is NOT suitable for PBEM.
I would cancel all but "Tomorrow Belongs to me" if it were for me because I agree, this game is NOT suitable for pbem if it's long scenarios like the Middle Ages and others because there arte no short term goals and it really gets boring.
I enjoyed the Pacific War and now Tomorrow Belongs to me (WWII) because there are short term objectives and continous action, but even the Napoleonic Wars which I'm playing as the Prussian I find boring and uninteresting (that scenario should have started in 1805 at least!)

Im playing in 20+ PBEM's most of which are over at Apolyton though I have two running at CGN too.

Currently involved in 4 here :) and always keeping an eye for any new games which might interest me.

I prefer to play the classic game as opposed to the conquests scenarios and have played several games now through to completion.

I have won a couple but lost in a lot more, but for me the real fun is in playing and being part of the wider game.

I do still find time to play SP occasionally but its nowhere near as much fun to me as it was before I got into PBEM. Playing against other human opponents as really helped me to improve my game and the AI is more or less no match in Single Player, although I have to say Ive not tried the Hardest levels.

One of the most fun things I think with PBEM is the tangled webs of diplomacy you can get into, sometimes choosing to ally with one or more players sometimes trying to go it alone, whatever its all good :)

My name is DogBoy, and I'm a Civaholic.

I'm currently involved in 25 PBEMs. I have an excel spreadsheet so I can track all my games as well as when I sent them, diplomacy with certain civs, and tech deals established. 25 may sound like a lot, but consider the fact that I just finished 13 PBEMs for one reason or another (other players quit), and you will agree that I have no life. I only wish I had more time so I coulnt' turn down some of these new PBEMs.

I'am a newb and i'am joined my 4th PBEM now. I'am also a civaholic with 9 SG's now and starting each GOTM and COTM, but mostly with no chance of a finish (because of my short time).
The best thing here is, to play with others, as team in SG's or PBEM's but also against each other.

I have completed 3 games of the American Civil War scenario,
a couple of WW2 Pacific games and one of my own mod, TOS.

I am currently playing one epic game which has been going
on for almost a year and we are still around 1700 BC.

I have been in 2 Napoleon games which have died out before
completion and the Ancient Med scenario which also died.

I had nearly forgotten about the Ancient Med PBEM, I was in one a couple years ago (PTW version) at CDG, but it did die out within a handful of turns, and I never tried another PBEM Civ game until now. We (Watorrey and I) are in the process of revising and updating The Ancient Med mod, we have corrected a number of bugs, and Watorrey is working on a revised Civilopedia and many new graphics. You should check it out if you are still interested in the mod!
