Or you could wait with the composite bow upgrade until you gathered a couple of scout promotions - which should be possible to get when fighting against barbarians. (And the pathfinder should be strong enough to survive those fights).
I am always dissappointed, when my scouts finds an upgrade without at least one of those valuable promotions...

True, but Scout movement is still pretty useful on its own for an ancient era Composite Bowman.
