Probably because they're deliberately handicapping themselves for a fun challenge?
The few players who can handle true standard settings deity are so good that they can do pretty much anything at lower difficulties and still win. Adding micro and hive mind benefits to the SG format makes those immortal "no cottage" games look pretty, but it still isn't optimal.
Playing marathon with 500 turn limit sounded interesting so I'm giving it a go. Played 300 turns up to 500bc so far.
I settled in place then built a city for the north west copper. Went for early masonry and build Great Wall. Then built a few phalanxes. HC died about 1300bc. Darius died about 1100bc. Then lots of mucking about not getting very far very fast against Just.
However eventually got to construction and chopped out a few cats:
To keep things more challenging I've still only got 2 cities (pop5 and pop4) and production's coming from chopping the plentiful forests. Razed 8 or 9 cities so far.
Still got another 20-25 cities to raze in 200 turns.
I ended up winning a cultural victory. I'm not sure if people consider this "cheesy," but I like being a peacemonger. I did eliminate Inca in the early game, and took over half of Persia. the game's attached if anyone wants to take a look. One file at 1952, and another at 1956, 2 turns before win.
For most of the game, Justinian was the points and military leader. I was quite afraid a few times that he would DoW on me especially with his 2 vassals, but thankfully it didn't happen before I popped 3 Legendary cities.
Also consider that this is my second prince win...
