Penalty for Trading from Ships?

In the old game, if you traded with the natives from a ship, they offered much less lucrative deals, and after a while they refused to do trade deals with ships at all because the ships scared them. Is there any similar mechanism in Col II?

Not that I've seen mentioned. If you really want to know send a wagon and a ship with the same load of goods and see what they will offer you. I highly doubt that the described mechanic was kept given the pervasive use of the Civ4 engine for diplomacy and trade.

I suspect you are right. That's a pity; I remember how important it was to build a trade wagon early to maximize your trade deals with the Indians. Now, inestad, you let your scout ride across the map and discover gold treasures everywhere. I call that dumbing down the game.

I like it, it makes selling muskets/horses to natives on European settlements that you don't plan to conquer later on alot more feasible.
