What are your favorite primary (many instances) and secondary (1 instance of) luxury resources to have in your capital?

This is a generalist question...obviously a :c5culture: game desires Wine or Incense, for example.

Me? I'll take Wine (primary) and Marble in a perfect world. Monastery is awesome and wine is just cool. Throwing out Marble, which will probably get a lot of votes, I will take an instance of Ivory. The circus is a nice little happy boost and I like having the "little" elephant roaming my capital :)

The strongest start under the current rules is a grassland river start that has lots of Cows, Horses, Stone and Marble. In general I prefer Mining luxuries to Calendar luxuries, though a bunch of Wine in a grassland start is quite helpful.

I'd say that what I'd most like to see is Gems as the primary and Marble as the secondary.

The Circus is probably the most important early game building now, since it's the only :c5happy: building on the path up to Education. Ivory tends to be in bad places as a rule, but Horses can spawn in better locations.

Gold / silver and marble.

That means I only need to go down mining to hook up my starting luxury resources, which frees up some slingshots I can pull off where I otherwise would have to go animal husbandry / pottery to hook up the resources.

I would have to agree with gold/silver and marble - plus the stone, horses and cows. The gold/silver /marble/stone stays in the mining tech tree, while horses and cows just help period.

Mining luxuries are the strongest. Early trade mean a lot of better choices. Calendar if a lot of them too. I don't build enough wonders to wonder about about marble. For strategic ressource, i like to have iron nearby. Horses are usually easy to get anyway.

Multiple stones/marble tiles combined with stoneworks is also strong, but less likely probable.

Interesting on the love for Mining luxuries. I almost always try the GL slingshot up to Theology or Civil Service (works reliably as high as Immortal, and I've pulled it on Deity) and I like to get Calendar ones first (ideally Wine or Incense) because I don't have to detour to Mining.

Then again, I still prefer a few nice piles of Gold or Silver to a lame-o Calendar resource like Dyes or Cotton that I can never improve upon with buildings.

Sign me up as a supporter of gold and marble. The income boost from gold is insane, and marble gives the Stone Works and increased wonder construction.

I recently played hotseat with friends on huge Earth map. I spawned in the Amazon, surrounded completely by jungle. I beelined ronze working then calendar and upgraded my three spice plantations and sold them off. I had steady pop growth in the capital thanks to the jungles (long time no need to make farms) and a large income from the luxuries.

But anyway, I also support mining luxuries. You can get them right away from the start, no need to wait for calendar/masonry. Horses are nice - quick Circus equals quick happiness.

Mining luxuries. Gems or Marble. The early hammers are so beneficial.

Can you build a mint if you settle on top of gold? I'd prefer to settle on gems with horses nearby.

Here is a question I have not had the opportunity to test yet (never got the right start):

If you are Inca and your starting point is one tile away from a mined resource on a hill (pref. Gold or Gems) AND there is a second identical resource within the BFC; would you settle on the hill (since you wouldn't lose a turn moving as Inca)? And what would be the initial GPT with a city like this?

Yep, mining resources are the best ones early on. I would always jump on gold, silver, or gems when I get the chance. Marble is great too, if you like spamming wonders.
