permanent DVD region change! WTH?

Having recently bought a Laptop, but also noticing the same with my desktop now that i looked, when using a DVD from a different region in Windvd4 it tells me that i can change regions 5 times and then it is permanent and cannot be changed to play any other region!!!

This is deadset crap! It is also in the manual of the laptop. Being an Aussie when me or my family makes trips to the UK or USA we buy movies from over there, some because you cant get them at all here (in region 4 encoding) and some just because your on holiday and there is a new movie there.

I also use my laptop on these trips like a portable player for the plane trip (very long from here, 14 hours to USA, 20 odd hours to London) and to watch the movies when we stay in whilst over there.

Anyway is there any way that anyone knows to change this setting to be able to play whatever disc i choose on MY computer?

Are there firmware or software updates that can get rid of this 'PERMANENT CHANGE'????

I didnt pay $3000AUD for a computer that tells me which movies im allowed to watch!

Whenever I insert a DVD movie in my DVD drive, I get a message saying I have 5 more times left until the setting is permanent, but it seems to reset each time I put a disc in (which is nice).

zulu thats pretty cool, do you put different regions in or just the same region which is why it never goes down below 5? It only changes once you actually alternate between region discs.

Plexus thanks heaps for the link ive downloaded the program, bummer i have to shell out for it after 30 days trial ends but i guess you cant always get something for nothing, i just reckon that the region coding for my computer is a load of crap!

Basically, the pop-up has already selected the region based on the region of the DVD I put in. I just hit Enter and it plays. Pretty neat, huh? If you're looking for a software workaround, btw, do a google search on AnyDVD and DVD RegionFree.
