Persian Immortals

Good to see there are others keen on persian warfare. Immortals can definitely dominate the acient warfare.

Here's a starting strat for You to try:

1. start with iron quest
Target:
- be first one to build swords
Actions:
- research iron working
- meanwhile explore & expand
- have a setteler ready when You complete iron working

2. immortals rush
Target:
- deny iron from AI
- get all acient techs for peace
- eliminate few closest CIVs

Actions:
- remember to build barracks
- set R&D to minimum
- start pushing immortal in all key cities
- when having a reasonable army (5- 10 I:s) start the first attack wave, allways attack cities with stack of least 5
- take a few cities + few techs for peare
- regroup and reattack, use AIs tactical weaknesses (get them before they get You)

This has worked for me most of the time, levels up to deity ( on tiny).
It work best on tiny and small map size and panagea, it wont work if You are on a solo island.

My best score is 10 K for an early conquest at deity. I've tried romans too but the offensive advantage of immortals is more valuable in the early ages.

Riders vs Samurai: they both cost the same, but there are several reasons why Samurai are better.

1. Samurai need 1 resource: Riders need 2.

2. Samurai can garrison and defend cities: Riders need to bring Pikemen along.

3. The Japanese see horses from the start [to build the crucial early horsemen]: Chinese might have to conquer them, and iron, if they can't see 'em fast enough.

4. The unit animation is SO much cooler! ;)

The Rider can retreat from any battle in it's age though. When being linked culture wise and fighting Japan, this can be a life saver. Samurai will not be able to retreat and thus will die more often than the Rider will.

Normally when playing either China or Japan I ally up with the other and war against India. There War Elephant (at that time) sucks unless the entire continent is denided of Iron/horse which I have never seen.

I like playing as persia in Regent levels and harder because i feel i have a better chance to compete. My brothers always call me cheap to use the same civ all the time, but they ALWAYS play on chieften where they know they can win. It is quite boring when watching them play.
When PTW comes out, i'm goin to have the advantage because since they never build any defensive guys because they are never attacked, i will hopefully run them over!

Riders can't retreat when fighting Samurais :p

Thus, the Samurais kill the riders when defending :goodjob:

I think immortals are cool as well but personally i prefer mounted warriors - the iroquious advantage beat the persian ones as well.
Mounted warriors smash everything in their path and when they dont they retreat.
I also like the War Chariot about as much as the immortal and the gypt bonuses beat persian as well (IMO)

How can the war chariot or mounted warriors be better than the immortal!?!? With the immortal, you can fortify on a city because it has the same defend as a spearmen, or use it to attack, because it is the best unit in the ancient ages. The only way you can hope to beat it is if you have a hoplite on a city that is settled on iron with a catapult that actually takes a hp away. Sure they can't retreat, but that is why you send about 4-5 to one city, to make sure you get it. But i've never lost a war in the ancient ages when i had the immortals.

The Persians are my favorite civ to play because I love the Scientific/Industrious combo; I like the free tech each age for building and keeping a healthy tech lead, and you can't beat the production bonuses of industriousness. Immortals are definitely a good UU, arguably not the best (as shown in this thread) but you are arguing minutia; they are far, far from the worst UU. In short, given the awesomeness of scientific + industrious for a player like me, the immortals are just a nice bonus.

The Mounted Warrior was clearly the best UU before the 1.29 patch. 2 moves and retreat ability more than made up for the 1 less attack/defense than the Immortal. However, since fast units now only have a certain chance of retreat, I would argue Immortals have taken the position as the best Ancient age UU. This might change after PTW, though. ;)

Yeah, the berserker will most liekly take the immortals' place as my favorite UU. Mainly because of the amphibious landing ability.
