Pirates! Mod Scenario

As a side note, playing this Mod made me finally decide to buy Pirates!.

Maybe Firaxis will give me a cut of any 2007 Pirates! sales. ;)

1. Spain seems to be unbeatable

Spain is definately not unbeatable, as Ambreville's own experience has illustrated (he seems to have utterly destroyed them, judging from the stats chart). Actually, the first three or four Spanish Treasure Galleons can escape without costing you the game (I know this from endless hours of playtesting).

2. Great general looks like red ball

That's odd. It might be a shader problem. I'll look into it. Do any other altered units look like red balls on your system? They should look like this:

Other new units are ok.

Ambreville: Interesting strategy, I'll be sure to try it.

Considering my first try at this scenario, I then went after Spain with a bigger stick, with an eye toward cost-effectiveness. I didn't actually "utterly destroy" them. I just took away Santo-Domingo and Cuba. Spain still retains a vast domain in Central and South America. And when they start sailing about with ships of the line, things get pretty dicey for pirates. I still object to Spain's as of yet unexplained and sudden skyrocketing score in the 1700's for Spain. Any reason for this?

By the way I like the idea of being able to capture ships (is this limited to just pirates so far?)

I started a new game with the Brits. I think they can win but haven't had the time to complete the game. The French look really wimpy in the setup. In the long run, the AI does very poorly with them. Not sure how well they could do for a player. No idea about the Dutch. Anyone tried them out yet?

Another hiccup I ran into are the combat odds. Generally, CIV4's combat odds are fairly unreliable. It seems they are even worse in this scenario. I doubt the scenario design has anything to do with this, but I almost routinely run into combat where my sloops attack treasure ships with combat odds of 35% or worse and still win[/B]. On the other hand, when I use pumped up sloops or captured frigates with combat odds of 89% or better, they die way too often. WTH???? If combat odds are so unreliable, why bother listing them. They are more irritating than anything at this point.

I think that this possibility should be given to defenite types of ships only.

By the way, how do I post thumbnails to avoid having huge images appearing in my post???
You should post an answer using an advanced menu ("Post reply" button) and then find there "Manage attachements" option.

Pardon me for being dense, but all that apparently does is allow the uploading of a file. I didn't see anything to control the actual size of the picture and how to make it possible for people to click on it and get a full picture... :confused:

Why? A pirate's a pirate's a pirate... I don't think it should matter what kind of ship did the capturing. Shouldn't pirates have a better chance than anyone else at capturing ships though?

The French are sort middle of the road wimpy. They lack any great strategic position or any particularly specialty unit, tech or civic. That said, they can be built up into a formidable force with SotL, but winning with them isn't easy.

The Dutch are the real underdogs, I suppose, but next to the Pirates, I like them the best. The Dutch Fluyts are their real secret weapon. Late in the game, once cites are pretty big and the Dutch navy well-established, a steady stream of fluyts going to a distant trading partner can give the Dutch a massive gold boost against which even the Spanish Treasure Galleons can't compete.

Only certain ships can be captured: sloops, sloops of war, brigs, frigates, SotL and barques. Treasure galleons, merchantmen, fluyts and pinnaces yield gold. You have to be attacking to capture the ship (you won't capture if you successfully defend). It might theoretically be possible for an Indian War Canoe to capture a SotL even.

You should simply upload a picture there, and it'll be automatically attached to your post.

My question was how to make it a thumbnail sized pix that enlarges when you click on it. I know how to upload. I just did that in my Jan 05 post.

I updated my warlords patch ver. 2.08. I installed your last version, but still I have a crash several turns later (around fall 1678 year).:(

Spain was something like 24,000 points ahead, and spanish galleons were appearing from nowhere in the straits of Florida. I posted 6 sloops around Bahamas, plus another 2 near Havana, one in the spot named straits of Florida, plus another 2 in the wind passage. Nevertheless spanish fleet was passing around :confused:

I dare to put yet one sloop north Veracruz, but only one galleon appeared over there. I could destroy 3 galleons but this doesn't appear to increase my points. I couldn't take any ship, but to sink them.

I took 3 cities in Florida and pillage all possible places in Cuba and Santo Domingo. I was close to get sloop of wars, but I was very far away to score anything close 2000 points. :cry:

Surely something is wrong here, but I can't figure out what, any ideas fellows of the coast?

Check out my post of a few days back. It's the one with the two "spoiler" entries. It should give you some idea of what's going on.

I suspect all these Treasure Galleons are sailing out of Cartagena, heading north via San Juan, and then veering northwest toward the exit area along the northern edge of the map, near northern Florida. Basically, to catch all these pesky Treasure Galleons, you need to picket all passages from St Kitts all the way to Florida. Trouble is, later in the game Spain will be sending Flag Galleons and Frigates after your ships. Beware, matie!

You need to pile up more than 100,000 gold (used to score victory points) before 1710 (give or take a few years), After that, Spain will probably win the game. Don't waste money with expensive land warfares or massive research. You'll reach the end of the tech tree soon enough.

Early on, Spain is basically helpless. It's near bankruptcy and can't affort to build troops or research much of anything. You need to hit Spain early and as cheaply as possible. And of course, you can't afford to miss too many of these Treasure Galleons either.

You've got a different version than what the mod is. It's easy to fix though: Open ...\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Assets\XML\GlobalDefines.xml and copy-paste the three numbers
Code:
	<Define>
		<DefineName>CIV4_VERSION</DefineName>
		<iDefineIntVal>200</iDefineIntVal> << That number
	</Define>
	<Define>
		<DefineName>SAVE_VERSION</DefineName>
		<iDefineIntVal>200</iDefineIntVal> << That number
	</Define>
	<Define>
		<DefineName>MAX_NUM_LANGUAGES</DefineName>
		<iDefineIntVal>100</iDefineIntVal> << That number
	</Define>
into the mods' GlobalDefines.xml.
