Pirates!

[*]We're OK on ground troop strength, at least for taking Paris, except for one detail. There are 6 ground units with no Galley transport. Three Galley builds are currently underway & I will hurry them along ASAP.

I guess I misread our leader's rule about trebs. I had thought we could bombard and attack with the seige from land, but any units capable of city capture had to attack from the sea. After re-reading the post, it seems only bombardment is allowed. Drat.

[*]Notice Courthouses being built or queued for various cities. I think Markets are better choices if we're going to bother building something to bolster finances. In addition to the commerce boost, Markets give us +3 :) with the resources we have already. But the map is too hammer-poor to make switching those builds worth the extra wait, so I'll let the Courthouse builds be.

I just remembered one other point from my turnset. Saladin canceled the furs for Ivory trade. That, combined with the ridiculous looking financial advisor screen lead me to select courthouses over the markets.

[*]There are only 2 Caravels escorting our Galley stack, with a third exploring Saladin's islands. I think the explorer Caravel is more useful on Galley escort duties than exploration & will recall it back to our home islands. I'd hate to lose boatloads of ground troops if Nappy decides to challenge our fleet with his own.

I had wanted to slot in a couple more caravels for that purpose too, but I just didn't get around to it. Several of our cities are completely unproductive. It often came down to a choice between galleys or caravels. We needed the troop transport more, ATM.

[*]A Galley is on goto to Roskilde, apparently to unload a Berserk, while our lone Spearman is still fogbusting south of Haithabu as near as I can figure. I am thinking of redeploying the Spearman to garrison Roskilde and then turning the Galley back around to join our forces near Orleans. Both the Galley and Berserk will serve better purposes in French War II.

I must've missed the spearman. Yet another reeason to wake up units that are fortified outside of ciites at the end of the turnset. In any case, I agree that we should swap the spear for the zerk.

I don't mean to come across as being critical of anyone's decisions, I'm just outlining changes I think I would make when I take my turns. I think overall we're in good shape to take over much or all of France, consolidate territorial gains, and completely crush anyone we want who isn't named Saladin come the age of Astronomy. :king:

No affront taken. I think one of the reasons all of us participate in SG's is for the gameplay analysis.

Once we take Paris, Nappy will be all but broken. Hopefully we can sink his navy upon capture. After that, we will have a considerable land and research lead.

I'll close with two screenshots I forgot to load from my turnset. No info in them, but they are good for a chuckle.

Spoiler :
In the first, we have a Japanese worker that was apparantly too good to be captured during the seige of Tokyo.

Japaneseworker.jpg

The second is just a funny Acqueduct at Rheims. Those French sure are awesome engineers. :crazyeye:

Rheimsaquaduct.jpg

sorry for the sleeping bersakers. as we had no transport to get them away when they were built and, I put them to sleep and forgot to wake them up at the end of the turnset. :(

I'm not sure how usefull converting to hindu is, as saladin has like 2x more votes than all the others (including us) together. It's going to be really hard to outvote him. I think as we have a peace with Napy ATM, we could get some troops noxt to Tokyo, give it back to Japanese and recapture it on the next turn as he want' have much troops there.
For the long term we have 3 things to do; increase the culture in Tokyo, whipe out Japan, or burn the AP down.

As for Paris I think we'll still a bit weak for a direct attack, but we should get our troops next to Paris, bombard down the culture and maybe try to lurk some troops out of Paris (the scout could be usefull after all :))

Played 22 turns to get to a nice round number. Start by touring our cities. Swap Rheims to work the quarry & Birka to work both forests. Cancel the goto move of the Galley near Haithabu. Move a Caravel to scout Paris. Lots of boats, light on troops.

Parisdefenders.jpg

When it comes time to attack Paris, plan is to land Trebs on hill north of the city & bomb defenses down, at least one turn, maybe two. Troops will also be landed south of Paris to prevent reinforcement from Lyons. Troops would be reloaded onto boats for the actual assault. With some luck, there should be enough troops still alive after taking Paris to roll over Lyons as well.

Hit <Enter>.

Turn 269: Saladin cancels Furs for Ivory deal. I trade him Deer for Furs, as we're happy capped, not health capped. Saladin then predictably puts up the return city vote again. Defy. Pop a GS in Nidaros, who lops 16 turns off Education. Chichen Itza BIFAL.

Turn 270: Roskilde grows into unhappiness. Garrison Spearman is OTW. Hindu cities now have +10  for world villainy. Maybe the only way to get rid of the damn votes is to kill off the Japanese? Scout Lyons, find 2 Longbows, 1 Axe. Also one HA and Axe between the two cities that can reinforce Paris if we declare war. Instead of bringing Caravel in Saladin's islands home, use it to search for the Japanese. Also get a not too useful event.

Pikemanevent.jpg

Turn 271: Revolt again in Orleans. Nappy now has Combat 3 War Elephants!? Pick up Scout with newly built Caravel from Nidaros. Explorer Caravel was attacked by barb Galley & needs 8 turns to heal. Whip Haithabu's & Rheims Galley for 1 pop as both cities are now on a downward spiral to size 1 because of all the unhappiness. In fact, every Hindu city with +10 world villainy  is on the same downward spiral. I mull over converting to Hinduism. It should bring us to Pleased with Saladin, but annoy the rest of the world. I decide to convert, hoping that improving Saladin's opinion of us might get him to stop calling that damn vote.

Turn 272: Saladin is now up to Pleased, while HC & Hatty remain Cautious. Not bad. Whip Bjorgvin Berserk, since the city is eventually going to shrink to size 1.

Turn 273: Whip Birka's Courthouse for 2 pop. Start Theatres in Bjorgvin & Rheims. Beg 100g from Saladin. Send Rheims' Galley to pick up Berserks at Bjorgvin & Birka.

Turn 274: Nidaros builds another Caravel, starts a Theatre. Birka Courthouse --> Theatre.

Turn 276: Another revolt in Orleans.

Turn 278: Nidaros Theatre --> Treb.

Turn 279: Education is in. Here's the tech situation.

techscreen.jpg

Next GP due in 21, with <70% chance of being a GS. Set research to Philosophy, due in 12. Since we know Machinery, a GS will not bulb Liberalism anyway, so if we somehow manage to win that race, it'll be researching the old fashioned way.

Turn 280: Get a handy event.

goodevent.jpg

Turn 281: Get a worthless +8 food event in Haithabu, which is stagnant from . Rheims is no longer uphappy and works the Stone. Angkor Wat BIFAL.

Turn 282: Popped Gold north of Nidaros! :goodjob: Our army, 12 Berserk & 4 Trebs strong is ready to cross the French border to try to capture Paris. It is time to break the French once and for all. We declare war and close on Paris.

Turn 283: The French immediately recapture Orleans. But Nappy foolishly leaves Paris with only 5 defenders, 2 Longbows, a Pike, an Axe, and a HA. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Paris was captured for the cost of 4 Trebs & 3 Berserks, all attacking right from the boats. (Forgot to snap a screenie.) The city houses the Great Wall, Scotland Yard, a GMI, as well as an intact Aqueduct & Forge.

Turn 284: Nappy continues to build boats. He just whipped a new Trireme in Orleans. :crazyeye:

IBT: Some naval combat near Lyons. Lost Caravel to a French Trireme.

Turn 285: Kill French Galley & Trireme. Trade our map + 10g for Saladin's map. Turns out Japan is about 15 tiles due east of Birka. It's a heckuva long trip for Galleys.

Turn 286: Lost 2 Galleys & killed one near Lyons. Nappy is down to attacking with Galleys, as he doesn't have any more Triremes at Lyons. Galleys were deployed to protect a weak Caravel. No ground troops were on board our boats. Birka Theatre --> Berserk. World villainy  is now down to 5. Looks like converting to Hinduism and getting Saladin to Pleased might have stopped the annoying return city votes.

Turn 287: Load 8 Berserks onto boats for attack on Lyons. It'll be bloody, but waiting longer will probably make it even bloodier.

IBT: Berserk fortified on Wine hill north of Paris kills a Sword and a HA. :goodjob:

Turn 288: Trade our map for Hatty's map + 25g. Also trade her (excess) Dye for Spices. We could use the :). Captured Lyons for the price of two Berserks. The RNG was kind this time. Two 3 XP Berserks were suicided as cannon fodder, but they did very well to take down the two Longbows to less than quarter health.

captureLyons.jpg

Turn 289: Turn down Hatty's request to adopt OR. I thought about this one for a while, because adopting FR will drop Saladin back down to Cautious and maybe raise the return city votes again. Tokyo is still only 33% Viking. Anyway, whip Paris's Theatre for 3 pop (city was starving badly anyway).

Turn 290: Loaded 6 Berserks of at least 5 XP onto the boats & they can retake Orleans in two turns if it's lightly defended enough to be doable. A Galley with a Berserk & Treb are headed that way from Nidaros. Two French Triremes are looking to cause trouble, but two Caravels are patrolling the Bjorgvin Fish. I queued an Archer in Paris to free up the Berserk on the hill if he's needed for the assault on Orleans. The Berserk at Rheims can also be used for attacking Orleans if need be.

Overall, we're in good shape. The world villainy penalty is now only 5 , the Hindu cities are all well below the happy cap now and can grow without happiness issues for a while. The other half of the world villainy penalty should wear off sometime in yena's turns. We should end Gallic War II after retaking Orleans as we can't reach the French islands until Orleans pops its borders anyway. Then consolidate our gains, build infrastructure, maybe switch to OR to build it faster.

Liberalism due in 12, HC has Philosophy but not Education while Nappy, Hatty, & Toku have the reverse situation, and Saladin has neither.

I've been using the capital to carry most of the load for building units of all types, while the rest of the empire is catching up on some infrastructure. Once Paris gets back on its feet, I think it's a good choice for the Heroic Epic/West Point combo, as it's got decent production & a GMI already merged.

Here are some screenies:

Japan.jpg

Japanese home islands. Kyoto looks to be built on a hill.

knownworld1.jpg

Our side of the world.

knownworld2.jpg

Far side of the world. Germany is the mystery 7th civ, but we have not made contact yet. Looks like Germany & Inca can each be completely conquered with one well planned campaign. Saladin is apparently diplomatically isolated and not teching so great, even though he settled lots of islands. HC founded four religions & Saladin snagged the other 3.

Another term with me as dictator is now over and the honor of successfully concluding Gallic War II goes to Captain Yena! :salute:

Got it. I'm pretty sure we will get liberalism, and I think we should take Astronomy to get a more mobile navy. It will take at least 20 turns of high WW more to kill all the remaining French cities, but I think we have to push on, if nothing else to be able to reach the Japanese islands and get rid of the Tokyo vote problem once and for all.

Does this sound like a plan, or do you prefer Nationalism and peace instead?

Wonder where the rest of our team is?

Anyway, I vote for Astronomy-->Gunpowder-->Chemistry-->Steel-->Military Science.

Astro + Chem for a strong navy (including Privateers to blockade), Steel for Cannon (& Drydocks), Mil Sci for Grens to upgrade our veterans. Grens come much sooner than Rifles & will own Rifles if an AI somehow manages to tech that far.

This was a long set, but I'm happy to say that the French are no more.

List of conquests:
1360 Orleans: no loses, kept
1400 Marseilles: no loses, kept (has ivory)
1405 Tours: heavily defended, lost 3 berserkers, 1 galley and 1 treb. kept
1440 Cartres: lost 1 treb, razed
1440: ??? (the city close to Japan): no loses, razed
1450 Roes: no loses, razed

I'm afraid that we are at war with Japan. It was the only way to reach the last French city, and since WW was quite heavy I thought it was a price worth paying. Unfortunately we lost a few good men in the fighting and we need to reinforce, so it is hard to take advantage of the DoW at the moment. I suspect it will be a phony war until Tokugawa starts talking again.

We need to do something about the economy. By growing the cities and taking a few turns to build markets and courthouses we should be able to get on track again. We got Astronomy from Liberalism and are 10 turns from Gunpowder, and I got a GS on the second last turn. He is in the capital, and could lightbulb Printing Press.

Wow. Nice set Yena, and great warring.

In other news, I agree with chemistry as next tech.

Btw, I think we should settle the GS, or build an academy in the capital. Lightbulbing looks like a waste for us.

Btw, I think we should settle the GS, or build an academy in the capital. Lightbulbing looks like a waste for us.

Considering we have the G.library in Nidaros, it'd probably be smart to build an academy.

Good work killing off the French, yena. :goodjob:

Things are looking good all around. I'm surprised how badly the AI is teching. They're really in for it when we get Privateers.

Academy in Nidaros sounds like a winner. BTW, both HC & Hatty are WHEOOH. I doubt they're coming after us because we look to have more Power, but still, something to keep an eye on.

Also noticed this:

Hieraconpolis.jpg

Guess we should move that Settler now. :crazyeye: No biggie, we're owning all of Hatty's land sooner or later.

And Saladin isn't one who's above holding a grudge against the dead:

worstenemy.jpg

So who's up now? qwertz?

Meant to mention this before, but Hindu buildings are +2 :hammers: each. Nothing to scoff at on this map.

Got it! Will play tonight.

Well, my set was pretty uneventful.

We go ahead and build an Academy in Nidaros. I figure why waste a perfectly good war and move to attack Toku. Unfortunately, there is an AP vote the next turn to cease the war. While I like the idea of taking Toku's 5 small cities, I do not relish it enough to take any unhappiness for defying the resolution. The funny thing is, both Toku and us want to continue the fight, but Saladin overrules us both, the big bully.

pirates3.jpg

I go ahead and work on infrastructure. Paris already has a GG settled and compared to our other cities, has decent production, so I start our Heroic Epic there. Afterwards, we may want to place Moai Stones there as well...

We meet this guy and get an Open Borders agreement.

pirates2.jpg

We discover a source of Gems in the other mine near Nidaros.

pirates1.jpg

We finish researching Gunpowder and start on Chemistry. Our Frigate and Privateer dreams are only two short turns from becoming reality. The boost to workshops is not to be scoffed at either.

An assault fleet is gathered just outside Toku's territorial waters if someone wants to take a stab at him. I fear that our Berserkers may have outlived their usefulness however...

It would seem that our Economy needs some work...we are currently only able to run 30% science without losses.

If we switch to FR, will we still be held prisoner to the AP?

Best of luck me hearties!

Looking good, and the privateers will soon provide some extra income  I suggest sending them off in pairs. The AI seems to have huge problems fighting off more than one privateer at once.

Madtown is up.

Hi guys, looks like you had some very interesting turns in my absence. I think we should slow down our conquest a bit and concentrate on our economy and some privateers, at least untill we get grens or/and rifles.
FR doesn't change anything about AP, but converting to hindu might do the trick. I think we should check this out and seriously consider it.

Nice to have you back qwertz, are you still on a skip, or was that a "got it"?

Rooster:
Madtown
Melior Traiano
yena
Morganknight (just played)
qwertz - skip?

got it (unless qwertz wants).

not much happened in the turnset;
we researched chemistry -> MS -> started on steel. we also traded for AH as there were some wired invisible horses, we couldn't work, near Paris.

our cities mainly built some infrastructure (there were cities with 20+ maintance without a courthouse). The capital has built the Moai Statues (building it in Paris might be better, but I think the wonder is too important to wait another 100+ years until Paris compleates HE and Maoi with it's production.) and is a real :hammers:monter now.

We also got a decent privateer fleet which is on the way to pillage the arab lands (this guy really has to be slowed down somehow).

After getting MS we set research to 0% to get the needed gold to upgrade our bersakers.
I think we should just upgrade them as soon as we have enough gold and dow Toku. After Toku is dead Saladin will be in a diplomatic isolation, with the help of the privateers we should them really be able to break his neck. :deadhorse:
