OK, I want to get the Steam achievement of downloading and playing a mod for Civilization V. But the question is, will any future patches or DLCs affect my game if I download a mod? Also is it easy to uninstall the mod from my game?

I need advise here because I have not downloaded a mod before and am a noob when it comes to this!

Thanks!

:)

From my understanding, you need to start a new game for DLC to take effect.

If the new game doesn't have mods, the DLC will definitely work. If it does have mods, then it depends on whether the mods allow that DLC.

Mods can be enabled\disabled from the mods menu.

In the game menu you see the option "Mods". That is where you can find the Mod Browser as well as the ability to play a 'modded' game. Mods do not effect regular single player games through started outside the Mods menu(I don't know about multi-player since I play CiV as a single player game only).

To download a mod simply go to Browse Mods, then click the Online Tab. Find a mod you want. Click download. Wait for it to download. Once downloaded go to the Installed tab. There will be an Install Mods button. Once installed you merely enable the ones you want to use and start a Single player game through the Mods menu.

Really simple. Just remember Mods don't effect games started outside the Mods menu.

Now if you like the base game and are just going for the achievement you could simply download InfoAddict. Easy to find and gives a lot of nice info without changing the game on you. There is also stuff like Luxury Resource Display which makes it easier to track your resources and what you have extra of. Really the hard part is picking amoung the many excellent mods out there!

Thanks for the kind info. Moreover, if I download and install a mod, will it affect any new patches that may come with the game later on? The reason I am asking this is because as a Sims 3 player, I had some bad experiences installing mods and when the developer released a new patch, the game became glitched!

Will the same thing happen with Civ 5?

Thanks!

Well mods may develop incompatibilities from patches if they aren't updated for the new patch. However, since you can easily toggle them off or on no long term harm can occur. Simply uncheck them in the mods menu or play a unmodded single player game of CiV.

Really the way the Mods submenu and mods themselves are incorporated is the 'right' way to have done it. Maybe the UI could be better and less annoying to click through. However, the structure of the system itself is done right. Not having played Sims 3 I can't say if they did it right or if they had the mods apply straight to the base game(which would allow for some really spectacular crashes I imagine); however, I am rather confident that the worst that will happen with CiV is that a game started from the Mods -> Single Player menu while a incompatible mod was enabled might crash. At which point you could re-open the game go to Mods -> Browse Mods and simply un-enable all mods you aren't certain of. You could also go through one at a time until you find the culprit and then delete it from the Mod Browser.

Anyways the point to take from this is - Modded Games are separate from the standard game. Mods will only affect something done through the Mods submenu. In addition it is simple to enable or un-enable mods as needed. It can get more complicated than that what with Mod Conflicts(I assume those exist here anyways) and all, but you don't really have to worry about a downloaded mod through the mod browser killing the core game. You always can play an unmodded game through the main menu Single Player option.

However, being relatively new to CiV I am sure some more in with the Modding community could give much more accurate and indepth information. I could be making an assumption that isn't true somewhere in there.

Just one other point Blanchflower

If you are still trying to achieve any of the steam achievements, enabling MODS typically stops you from gaining any progress in them.

So does that mean that if I enable any mods and achieve a Steam achievement, I would not get it? But if I disable the mod, I would get a particular Steam achievement?

In that case, why does Steam have an achievement with regards to mods? This defeats the purpose!

Yes, it does defeat the purpose rather. The info addict mod is great but I play without it so that I can still get achievements. Not sure if it applies to every single mod.
