I am almost ready with my 10th game of civ3 and I have just one question...
HOW DO YOU PLANT A SPY / AGENT IN A RIVAL CIV.

My god, I am looking for it for weeks and months. How can something that important be so stupidly hard to find.

Well if your talking about having a spy recon a city or try to steal a technology for you then you click on the little 'E' in the lower right corner of the screen. It is just to the right of the display that shows you the turn info, year, gold etc. If your talkinga bout having a spy try to sabotage productionthen I'm not sure if its in the same menu or not. I have never seen it appear in there but I may have not had the proper tech to see it. Mine has just always had 'Scout a city' and 'Steal tech'

Yes, I have seen that one. But that is what you can do without a spy.

In order to plant a spy, you must first build the Intelligence Agency small wonder, which is available after Espionage. The city you build it in will have a pentagon icon next to it's name. Double click that and select the civ you want to plant a spy in.

Ctrl+Shift+E is the short cut and works great as well. However I would have to agree with the above, spying rarely does anything. Investigate City is about the only thing I rely on, and that you get with Embassies.

The only usefull purpose of a spy is the ability to see all units a rival Civ has through the War Advisor. All other options are a waste of $$$$$$$$$$$$.

I meant the feature.

I am not too impressed about the power of the addtional options either. Quite often even the planting of the spy fails....Hiawatha is not pleased and thinking of retailation..

Also strange is that to uncover an enemy spy you need a plant a spy first. But: if you are uncovering an enemy spy I presume this operations occurs in your own captital, so why do have to plant one in their capital to do something in your own capital:confused:

Mabye you find information in their capitol about the spy and then go to your city to find the spy

This isn't the only thing I use spies for, but it is the most useful, IMO. And don't forget - you can't investigate cities with an embassy if you're at war - the embassy will be closed. With a spy, however, you can investigate a city any time. Useful at times if your rival is to strong to attack indiscriminately or if you want to track Wonder production.

I've been working under the assumption that as long as I can read details of enemy militaries on the Military Advisor screen, then my spy must be in place (ie not exposed by the enemy). It also seems that the MA is the only advisor who keeps track of what government each civ is using.

The Japanese are my main rival and are obnoxious as always, even with Aggression Edited down a notch. I've developed tanks before they did, and I've moved a dozen of them, with supporting infantry and artillery, across the small ocean and have them stacked up in a gigantic pile right on his border outside a town of mine.

I want them to declare war on me as I'm a Democracy. So, I attempted to EXPOSE ENEMY MOLE. I am convinced if there is NO mole to expose your spy will always get caught - another AI stupidity. The sting mission of course failed and the IDIOT AI declared war, even with all those tanks!! Of course, I soon crushed the Japanese, the AI showing its continued stupidity by refusing to talk to my envoy.

Yes, even with Espionage costs Edited way down, it is only good for getting them to declare war. Spying in Civ II was so much more enjoyable.

All true Ranger! And in some cases there are other useful purposes for spys. Yet IMHO anything else then getting information is really expensive vs . success rate. Please convince with examples that prove the opposite!
