Player joining game as different civ

So, me and my friend were playing a game of civ, and we logged off for the night. He was playing Babylon, but the next day every time I invited him he connected as India. We could not solve the problem obviously, and a google search yielded nothing. So, any suggestions?

I had the same problem the other day. If it is what I'm thinking about the second slot still says the Human player name and, upon the player joining the go into another slot.

The workaround I achieved was to kick the 'player' from the second slot and then have the human player to swap into that slot in the pre-game lobby.

Some time ago we had a similar problem. It turned out that player needs to keep the Steam nickname he had in the start of the game. Otherwise game may not let you play your previous civilization, since it reserves that civilization for the certain nickname.
