I've come across some things that I haven't yet quite figured out. I saw some screenshots of people playing as Hyborem but I don't see it as a selectable leader/civ.

Furthermore how can I upgrade units to be able to cast divine spells??

You have to research divination IIRC

As for Hyborem you summon him and are asked to play him when you found the Ashen Veil religion.

1-You need to first found the Ashen Veil religion. Then you will be given a choice to switch.
2-You need to have a religon, the required resource (gems, incense, or reagents), and a temple to build a priest. Priests don't require mana, they will get all their spell choices automatically. They level up periodically w/o fighting. High Priests & Inquisitors require a priest unit to be level 6 (I think) to upgrade.

In order to cast divine spells, the unit must have the "Divine" promotion. this cannot be gained, it is only granted upon unit creation (or upgrade) of priest units. (and a few heros) The priest unit will have several of the level 1 spell spheres, dependant on his religion, which will allow him to learn the level 2 divine spells of those spheres only. (or 3 for high priest/inquisitor)

Okay so I figured out how to summon Hyborem, which is pretty cool.

But about the priests, which unit do I make? I tested with way of the earthmother and made soldiers and thane's and they were never able to cast divine spells...

As a follower the runes you need to build stonewardens. They require access to gems to be built and you must have the priesthood tech.

With the Runes of Kilmorph religion, you need, all in the building city:

The 'Gems' luxury resource.
The 'Temple of Kilmorph' building.
The 'Priesthood' technology.

When all these are present, you can build the Stonewarder (warden? I dunno.) unit, which can cast divine spells.
The 'Thane of Kilmorph' and 'Prophet' units can also be upgraded to stonewarders in cities meeting those three criteria.

With other religions, you'll need their respective temples as well as, replacing gems, the 'Reagents' (for the Ashen Veil) or 'Incense' (for all other religions) resources.

Neither a soilder nor a thane is a priest. However, you can upgrade a thane to the a priest of Kilmorph, which is called a Stonewarden. I think this requires gems and the technology priesthood, but it might be a different tech. Most religions' priest would require the same tech, but a different resource (I think they all need inscense now, but this may soon be changed). Al the priest have unique names. For the order, it is Confessor and for The Ashen Veil its Ritualist, but I don't remember the other priests' names at the momebt. In .20 they all upgrade to either a high priest (with inscense) of an inquisitor, but unique high priests (and patriarchs) are going to be added to .21
