OK, I have been playing Civ4 at home for a little over a month. Due to the nature of my job, I often have prolonged periods of downtime, during which I cannot leave. So I decided to install Civ 4 at work. Do I have to keep shuttling the discs back and forth from home to work everyday? Am I supposed to buy a copy for my work PC? I know there are probably CD protection hacks out there or something like that, but I don't want to know about stuff like that. I just figured since I bought it, I might be able to run it on more than one PC. Most gamers have more than one PC these days anyway. TIA.

Then you're screwed.

Refer to the previous paragraph.

Basically, the game maker wants to tie the game not only to one machine but also to one set of fragile optical discs, so that if they break you also need to buy the game again. In some countries this is against the law, you always have the chance to make backup copies even against DRM and unfair EULAs.

One suggestion for you is to contact 2K Games and ask a quote for a two machine license (or second machine license). Perhaps they will just ignore you or offer to sell you another box at retail price, but if enough people will query them, perhaps they will understand that selling a two seat license (without Safedisc or some such ****) at less than $100 will actually earn them money, because people who want to be honest and pay for what they get will be less inclined to get the whole game for free from unauthorized sources, because there is a FAIR legal alternative available.

Personally I think it's ethical to get your no-cd patch and use CivIV in how many computers you like, IF only you use it or otherwise make sure that only one copy is at use in any given time. If you play a network game with a guest in two machines, then you MUST buy two games to stay fair.
