Please help install Civ4 on Aspire 1

I don't want to close this thread, but I feel I must point out that, according to the EULA, you must have purchased a separate copy of the game for each machine you install it on (unless you remove it from one before installing on another).

I don't have a copy of the EULA handy, but that is what it used to say, at least. If someone can prove me wrong, I'm more than happy to withdraw that statement.

The EULA does specify this.

FWIW, the EULA is at best nonsensical, at worst contradictory, regarding CD/DVD use, since the EULA is contained in the 3.19 patch readme, but still prohibits running the game without the disc, which the 3.19 patch made unecessary.

The US version of Civ 4 Complete (the complete version with Colonisation) is DRM free and does not need the CD in the drive to play any of the games. The European version of Complete (does not include Colonisation) or any of the other games do need the CD in the drive to play, with the exception of Beyond the Sword v3.19.

I certainly did not intend on putting this website, or any of it's users, in a legal "rock and a hard place". If you have any doubt whatsoever, i respect and encourage you to do what you feel is necessary.

The purpose of this is not solely for gaming purposes, as my Nephew uses the aspire for college, and needs to be able to create and/or transfer files to CD format and vice-versa, quite regularly. As far as the game goes, I've resorted to waiting until i can afford to purchase another copy.

I appreciate all the efforts put forth on the matter, i guess i'm just too computer ignorant to understand the nuances of all of this

If anyone wants to try and help with my colonization problem (as explained in that downloads forum), i will keep an eye on that thread. Thanx again to all, and...

peace

That's all I needed to hear.

I left the thread open primarily because it is a legitimate question/problem: how to install on the Aspire1. I am sure many people can benefit from that discussion.

I understand "direct2drive" to mean that the retailer installs the game to your computer over the internet. If this is in fact the case, the solution to this dilemna is quite a simple one. If you want civ on an aspire... you must purchase the D2D version.

At least, that's where I'm at

Let me just say that if you get this far (of the thread), the answer is in here. Thanks once again to ALL of the contributors.

You can purchase any version. D2D, Steam, Physical copy. It makes no difference.

The difference lies in how you install them. With D2D and Steam you do not need to go through creating ISO's of the cd's or dvd's and can simply install. Nonetheless, all ways, including making an ISO copy to use as install media on your Aspire 1.

I recommend against using D2D, horrible site.

The intent of the EULA is clear, though: one legally purchased copy of the game per machine it is loaded on.

I'm sorry if people are not made out of money and buying two copies of the game so you can install it onto both your own desktop and your own laptop is utterly ridiculous. I can see if it is (as it likely is) intended so that people don't share it with friends, but if its your own computers, so what? Why should we have to tell absolutFANatic to go buy the game AGAIN?

Would me saying that I have installed the game on all 5 computers (or just my own two, although it is only on one in reality) in this house then get me a warning or something on the forum?

Well, many games and software have EULAs which specifically do allow a single user to install the game to multiple computers, as long as only one copy is in use at a time.

On the other hand, the Civ4 EULA is very explicit in only allowing a single installation.

In an ideal free market, customers would vote with their wallets by not purchasing software with overly restrictive EULAs. (Or by creating laws in their countries which override EULAs - which is the case in many places.)
