what i like in RPG's:
1) open ended gameplay with towns and citys and character interaction
2)real time battles
3)no random encounters
4)some sort of class custimization.

if you know a good rpg that doesnt meet any or all of these guidelines go ahead and recommend it anyway.

thanks in advance :)

Golden Sun 1 and 2.

Even though those weren't for the DS specifically, you're missing out if you haven't played those.

The only category it passes is #4, but trust me, it's worth it. It's actually very strong in the class customization area! You get to experiment with all the djinns and see which strategy works for you. :)

so there arent citys and towns and shops and NPC'S?

i saw a copy of golden sun at game stop...i might buy it

oh and one more question, does your equipment or class change how you look? or is it determined from the start of the game?

Chrono Trigger, in case you haven't played the SNES version

Etrian Odyssey, easily the best RPG for the DS

Shiren the Wanderer, if you're interested in roguelikes

It's not open-ended. You have to follow the plot. But, that being said, the plot is really awesome. Especially at the end of Golden Sun 1. I'm not spoiling it, but that was a great twist.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't change on the general overview (I could be wrong!). But you can change classes and attacks, and you wield different things depending on what you're holding.

You are however stuck with the same characters who come at the same time every time you play the game. That's not exactly condusive to replayability, unless you want to collect all the djinn or something.

I know that sounds bad, but the game's worth it.

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy III (this one is going for about $20 in the States)
Dragon Quest IV
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance II
Chrono Trigger
pre-order Pokemon Platinum :p

I love the DS.
