I have searched but were unable to find an answer, I managed to do Spanish my vassals, now I have a small doubt, do I have to gift them all my techs ?

It seems better to have your vassal as strong as possible, but I don't want that they start trading with my tech to other civs.

What's your opinion ?

TIA

I gave one time my all techs to my vassal,Catherine. And as i declared war to someone(being my vassal for 200 years),she released herself. It is not a good idea.

But you can give them any techs, that make them happy:)

And conversely, the answer to your original question is: no, you don't have to give them anything.

The vassals might become angry at you for not sharing, but the game itself doesn't force you.

Morally, I am opposed to Spanishing my vassals. But I'll ignore that and get to your question.

A strong vassal can be helpful. But they can trade away techs. There is a risk that it can go wrong for you. To reduce that risk, you have to make sure your vassal doesn't like anybody else. Declaring a few wars with your vassal at your side can help with that. Maybe you can find other ways to make your vassal mad at other civs or vice versa. Or use the No Tech Brokering option and don't worry about this.

But you have to look at your vassal's state. If it is too small or too fragmented to ever be a strong civ, then there's no point in trying to get it up to speed technically. It's never going to be able to help you.

Also, don't give it techs that might make trouble for you. For example, no Drama or Music if you can help it. You don't want your vassal's borders bothering you. And no Rocketry: You don't want them wasting time on the Space Race. And no Democracy: You don't need them causing you more unhappy faces.

I find that it is usually pointless, by the time they are my vassal they are a few cities strong so they couldn't really help anyway. I will gift them some techs occasionally, but never recent ones.

I only give some tech to my vassals if they ask to become my vassal and have a friendly relationship with me .
On contrary No any tech and I try to prevent them from advance ,If I capitulated them .

I know I had gandhi do that once. But I would never share tech with them that way. They can break the agreement too easily.

Vassals are annoying. They're a drain on your economy and doesn't give much in return. Personally I say don't bother with them unless in a few circumstances where you actually need them eg in domination or diplomatic victory (but if the civ is weak enough to be your vassal then maybe you should probably just attack and conquer it). Another time is when you settle on another continent and the maintainance cost is too much for your economy then you could give them independence and they become your vassals.

Oh and be wary of civs who offer to be your vassals. Chances are their neighbours are planning an attack. Even if they become your vassals they might attack anyway and drag you into the war.

Same thing happened to me. THe person had about 5 or 6 techs that he refused to give me (as those techs were red out!). I was pissed if your my vassal YOU give me those techs or i'm going to attack you!

I give techs sparingly to regular vassals (vassalized after their defeat, or through overwhelming domination over them), and not the ones that would facilitate their expansion too much (eg: medecine or cultural techs), but sometimes I want to give them a military edge if they are quite friendly and I expect to go to war with them as allies. Problem with those types of vassals is that they sometimes regain their independence and can hurt you.

Colonies, however, are another matter (I use "no tech brokering"). I give them most techs, holding back only when those techs would make them lose time on stuff that is useless to me (eg: rocketry), especially if said colonies were founded in an early era (via Galleys) as there's enough time then for them to catch up and becomes virtually a "real civ" useful to you for defense (buffer or outer defenses - useful especially when built close to a rival)/war, especially if gifted by me with a few units to help them catch up (extraneous workers notably - I noticed colonies tend to neglect their land to build an army and some culture etc.). When I use colonies for land grabbing to block rivals on their continents (I love to do this to the expansionists or the too good techers), I like to turn them into pain in the butt for the rival... so multiple religions, a few units, extra ressources and all the techs.

I would make many changes to the colony system (their own rules/diplo system rather than using the vassal system, notably) but they're still fun, funnier to use than regular vassals.

What exactly does a vassal do? Do they take a cut of your income or something? Seems like they just tag along with you, no real purpose?

  • They can be a buffer between you and somebody you don't want invading you on turn one of the next war.
  • If they are strong, they can be a helpful ally.
  • They contribute a little happiness to your population.
  • Their lands/people count towards world domination victory condition (at 50%).
  • They usually vote for you in the UN.
  • They can be forced to supply you with a resource.
  • They research the techs you want them to research. Maybe they won't trade them to you, but their researching of a tech makes your later researching of it easier. (As is the case with any other AI.)
  • They are better to have than not have. Any civ that is your vassal is not somebody else's vassal. You really don't want to have to fight two, three or four civs at once!

do they steal a % of your gold per turn or anything like that? or do they share any of your resource or other attributes?
