This has prolly been asked before so If it has, be so kind as to excuse my newbie-isms

What function does the tech of plumbing have? Is it a bug or does it actually serve some useful purpose? If so, what?

There is a tech slot (unused) for plumbing, in the Improvements Editor for Civ2 MGE.

I think it was for a scenario. I've always wondered about that myself...

I guess it just didn't make it into the final game.You can add it in if you like.Make it a pre req for another tech,improvement or unit.Even a wonder if you want.You could make it a pre-req for Sanitation,which seems like a natural.

It's just another tech that you can add to the game if you want. Just edit rules.txt, et voila! Plumbing is a tech on the way to sanitation, or whatever else you might wish.

In one of my games (a long time ago) the French acquired Plumbing from the Persians even though I didn't make any changes to the rules.txt.

Plumbing is a bit like the Phlanx defeating a Battleship, just one of the big mysteries of life!!!

I rename it and put it to good use, like Free Artistry or Military Tradition or summat!

Well really the obvious place for plumbing to me rather than making it a step on the road to santion is a contendedness factor. In some twisted scenario your citizens could award you more accolades and cheering by designing the toilet to beat all toilets. This supreme satisfaction each and evey one of your citizens could then have each day would presumably have other spin off benefits.

Well plumbing was probably and advance that allowed you negotiate with other civs that had a flooded basement etc and enabled you to charge extortionate rates to get it fixed.

No, that's cowboy plumbing and requires the sanitation and ten-gallon hat advances to research . Plumbing seems a pretty dumb tech to have when you've already got sanitation - I reckon that the programmers were just messing around with the tech titles before release and couldn't think of a better name for their spare tech so left it with that. I'd be interested to find out what the others were though - contraception? s&m - acts like a police station but makes malcontents happy? Other childish jokes anyone?
