My plan is to make COTM115 starting 8 July an Austrian game.

Would be fun to play a nation, that we have never played before...! However, I have one question: does it need manual modifications in the file system? And will these modifications have to be "reverted", if I want to play a "normal" game again?

If so, we would of course need very precise instructions on what to do, and hopefully there is no risk to accidentally destroy one's C3C installation?

It does need manual modification in the file system. This naturally means that there is a (small) risk that one accidentally destroys one's C3C installation. But as far as I understand, there is no need to revert the changes in order to play a normal game again. I will of course investigate this before actually presenting the game and make detailled instructions. I also intend to have a small test game so that all can make absolutely sure that all works as intended.

The changes are to the file pediaicons.txt. A reasonably safe way to do the changes is to create a copy with a name such as pediaicons_original.txt of this file before making any other changes.

Any UU after Chivalry or other early techs in the MA needs a cotm-design which makes it "attractive" to reasearch it.
Otherwise I won't modify the file system...:undecide:

Of course it would be boring to set the game up for quick victories, say on a small pangaea. On the other hand, the circumstances under which most of the better players ever research Military Tradition are rather special and would confine game design. All Austrian, Ottoman and Russian games would be the same. civ_steve gave us so many Gilligan's Island starts that players started to complain. If the maps are too large, we get complaints and requests for longer playing time. Some balance must be found.

As it is, the Austrian Hussar is a Cavalry replacement with 7 attack points instead of 6. This is a very marginal advantage. We could of course come up with a better idea for the attributes of this unit. That could be a way of increasing its attractiveness.

maybe that would be a good idea. like, Hussars always were rather light armed cavalry, thus the extra attack point may not really hit it. what about such a unit, to motivate everyone to really research them as well as being historically more accurate:
-A/D/M 5/3/2
-60 shields only
-treats all terrain as roads
-blitz ability

what do you mean? ;)

who is the one with the signature saying: great minds think alike! (and fools seldom differ)... ?
:D
btw, it is two Austrians contemplating stats for an Austrian military unit... ;)

I live in Vienna, but am not from here. I like to see the Austrian Civilization respresent Alpine Celtic, Bavarian German, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Slovenian and Croatian etnicities (I'm not from there either) like the Iroquois Civilization represents all North-American native tribes. How else could they be Militaristic (Hungary, Croatia) and Industrious (Czechoslovakia)? The Hussar is obviously Hungarian.

I think I know the source of our apparent telepathy. We have probably both heard the story of the adventures of an Hungarian Duke during the Napoleonic Wars, riding through forests behind enemy lines to bring despatches.

All terrains as roads would be more than enough to make up for the attack loss... but I feel that would have the opposite effect that Piu Freddo was talking about, which is the problem of time consumption. Just thinking about the logistic possibilities of a unit that essentially has 6 moves in enemy territory is an absolute planning nightmare. With great power comes great responsibility: It would be stupid not to take full advantage of that benefit, and taking full advantage would offer so many possibilities that calculation and planning would be so overwhelming
My head with a unit like that: :run:
