For anyone that likes the samurai:

Veteran War Elephants defend almost as well as Veteran Samurai. It will only defend at 3.75, while a Samurai will defend at 4. A veteran War elephant attacks at attack FIVE.

That extra hp makes a lot of difference. Check it on a combat calculator.

EDIT: Of course, I mean compared to the samurai. It obviously does not attack at 5 and defend at 3.75.

It is between the Mounted Warrior, Rider, and Panzer for me. I'd say my favorite is the Rider though. The Mounted Warrior is absolutely great for a very early, very powerful blitz most civs cant beat it back, except the Greeks, but they have a hard time if the Iroquios are concentrated on them, but their GA is a bit to early for my liking. For the Panzer the GA comes to late in the game for my liking. Usually the game is decided by then, but I will say that Panzers look extremely cool. But my vote goes for the Rider, ability to quickly blitz opponent, and a great time for a GA, right when those Riders normally take 10 turns to pump out, the GA reduces it to five in most cases.

No Rider?

It's the best with Gallic Swords close behind.

Units with 3 moves are incredible, particularly in the age of Pikes when no other civs have 3-move units...

For me, it was a coin-toss between the Hoplite, Immortal, and Legionary--except I didn't have any three-sided coins handy.

Early in my Civ3 career, it was the Hoplite, hands-down. Except for one big problem. If an enemy goes stomping through your territory without actually attacking you, your Hoplites are useless; the enemy can pillage your empire to pieces, and you must scrape up other units to get rid of them.

The Roman Legionary is offense and defense in one handy package. It can defend as well as a Hoplite--but I've found offensive units to be incredibly useful on the defensive, for actively seeking out intruding units, taking advantage of their usually weak defense, and eliminating them before they can do any damage.

On the flip side, Legionaries can invade enemy territory, then fortify to hold onto what they conquer.

The Immortal, you can on the continent before the Med. age

You can do that as the aztecs also
I like the hoplite, but the war elephant is my new favorite
I voted for the h'wacha because no iron is nice on a diety archipelago when you are not going to have resoures

In my opinion the Jag is just funtastic if you use it smartly.
I.e you can very quickly find out where the other civs are and can cripple them mightily. Just capture workers and settlers, pillage roads and escape! The stupid AI will build more units - some to defend itself against the 'dangerous' Jags near their cities and few to chase the Jags or go for your cities. If you keep runnig around their territory they won't catch you and can't build infrastructure. :satan:
Later on you can build some descent units and blitz the crippled civs around you.

Alternatively you can try to capture weakly fortified cities with you Jags, but running around causing havoc just rules!

The early golden age is a true pain in the butt but the damage you can do is well worth it ;-)

Okay, why is an early Golden Age a problem?? I find it simply gives me a head start in the early game. Everybody sez the early game is the most important part.

Color me clueless here. :crazyeye:

The Aztecs GA is just a bit too early. IMHO it's better to have your GA when you have more than very few cities and have a somewhat decent government.

Don't know if it is the best UU, but the Roman Legionary is the one I like best :)

Gallic Swordsmen - they are early Knights that do not need Horses, the only drawback is that you cannot build them after triggering GA. No. 2: Mounted Warriors (cheaper than GS but still attack 3 + retreat), No. 3: C3C War Elephants (resourceless and almost 5/4/2).

funny how everybody seems to have a different opinion on this. with good and not so good arguments.
in my opinion there are a few UU's that are better than the rest (i play civ 3):
immortal
legionair
mounted warriors
hoplite

they are better, simply because they have qualities other units (UU or not) have not.
somebody mentioned the rider, because the have good movement. good movement doesn't win the battle. once in front of the cities of the enemy, they don't perform any better than a knight.
war elephants because u don't need any resources? if u don't have the resources like iron or horses, u are probably wiped out by the time u can build war elephants.

i stand by my choice: the immortal is by far the best agressive unit of the game. in that age most units don't even come close.
on the defense there is nothing like the hoplite. stronger then any attacking unit except for . . . . the immortal.
a good compromise is the legionair. they have a bit of both.

i gave the samurai a second thought. i like it, but it is not an extremely good UU.

Incredibly flawed and incomplete questionnaire.

10 of 31. Creation of new name terms for the Mounted Warrior e.g..

I could give my 5 cents to this debate, but I would rather say if you made a selection of UU's, you have done a rather shabby one.

I would have put my vote on samurai.

In Conquests they have an extra HP and it makes them the best attackers until Cavalry and almost as good in defence as Musketmen or Samurai. I think it makes them unbalanced - they should be 5/2/2 instead.

Best regards,

I agree mostly. I thought I picked the best top 10, but a top 20 would've been way better. Didn't realize the opinion could be split so much. As this is a poll of the best UU, not favorite/most fun, I'm surprised people would even consider a Hoplite over a Legion: 1.3.1 20 shield vs. 3.3.1 30 shield.

The three most popular left off so far is Chinese Rider, India War Elephant, and Japanese Samurai. Some have also mentioned Hoplite, Swiss Mercenary, and Musketeer - the defenders.

Even with these units mentioned as some have, many who mentioned these would have still voted for those included in the poll. I wouldn't mind starting a new poll up with all the mentioned choices put in. This could be a nomination practice poll for the "true best UU poll™" :D . But now, it is just a poll for fun.

u seem to forget a very important quality of the hoplite: u can upgrade them.

My favorites are:
Immortals
Legionarys
Gallic Swordsmen
