Poll comparing civ4 vanilla with cIII + all patches/expansions

Civ 4 will win due to the simple fact that it is older and the "mass market" doesn't play older games, but instead new games with 3D graphics and Sim elements.

Uhh, civ 3 is older, not civ 4.

Sorry, but it depends on the forum. Civ 3 wins in Civ 3 forum, Civ 4 wins in Civ 4 forum. For me, it's close. I still play 3 for variety.
