Probably not; I haven't played civ 1 since civ 2 came out, and probably wo't play civ 2 once civ 3 comes out.

Unless, of course, they completely [mess] it up!

Yeah. It is kinda hard to give it up entirely after spending so much time on it.
I don't think that people will play it as much, and gradually only a few die-hard fans will play.

Personally, I think Civ III will be a rather different experience from Civ II, and some people won't like to change.

Hehehe. I'll be playing Civ 2 for a l o n g time after Civ 3 comes out...unless the publishers smash the status quo and release the Macintosh version at the same time as its PC counterpart.

Let's think about it for a moment. What is the greatest computer game of all time?

Answer: Civ II.

When Civ III comes out, what is the worst postion Civ II could be in?

Answer: The second greatest computer game of all time!

Now would someone actaully make the case that they would never again play the second greatest game of all time?

There are several other factors, too. For instance, we can confidently predict the machine and performance requirements of Civ III will exceed those very modest requirements of Civ II. So the machine issue is going to be an issue for many people in the world... not everyone has the latest hardware

. Another issue is platform... I doubt Civ III will be available on MACs or Linux, for instance... at least for some time. In Linux, you'll need WINE or another emulator, which gets right back to the performance issues.

So Civ II will be played, no matter how good/bad Civ III is... 20 years from now, Civ II will still be a great game, just like many people find Asteroids and Pac Man, though dated, are still fun 20 years later!

Assuming patches and standard Civ II remains available, don't you mean?
MGE is off the shelves.

I'm looking forward to III very much, with hopes the bugs and weaknesses in II are removed.

Chances are I probably will keep on playing Civ II after Civ III comes out, unless Civ III is the exact same thing with better graphics, units, gameplay, more realistic, still able to edit maps, etc.

Starlifter,

I actually AGREE with something you just said

Sure it's a lighthearted Civilization topic but it's a start - right? *grin*

I will most certainly play Civ2 well after Civ3 comes out. I'm not sure if I'll get Civ3, as I have barely had Civ2 for half a year, and am still to play a nice scenario or anything. And so, the minute I get it working, everyone else will suddenly abandon it like a horde of lemmings. IMO, SFW.
I will play it for a while, at least while I still play computer games. I played Pool of Radiance from 1992 to 2000. It was already basically well outdated in 92, but I liked it, stuck with it and its ilk, and the only reason I don't play it now is because it is on my other computer.

I think Civ 3 is changed so much from 2 that people will still play 2 because of somethings they of liked that was changed.
