Generally play Long Ages, cuz it's just easier to get all the legacy paths completed without losing out on XP from Leaders.

But even so I've had nothing but fun with 7, honestly haven't touched the other 2 games (5 and 6), since 7 came out.

Long Ages, Personal records, Positive (that last with caveats)

I play games to write stories in my head; to enjoy narratives created by in-game situations and play that either include self-imposed goals or are unanticipated when I start playing.

My latest game is a good example: playing as Rome, but I changed the name of the capital to Byzantion, then Byzantium, then Constantinopolis, now in Modern Age playing as France it is Lutetia.

My two most-promoted Army Leaders are Belisarius and Turenne (which is what happens when a military historian is allowed to name Leaders in a game . . .)

The caveats come with the fact that I wish there were far more options to the game, and far more varied and variable Legacy Paths. That puts me, I think, in the same boat with @AriochIV , in that I'm not sure how much longer I can maintain interest in a game when the basic play of the game is so repetitive and linear.

As I work my way through the leaders the first time, I continue to have an overall positive experience with the game.
No mods, mostly standard sized maps, normal Ages. On a meta level, I even like the changes that I've seen in the game since release, as patches change things. I wonder if the victory I had with Ben Franklin back in March would play the same way today.

In my experience with Civ3 and BERT (my two favorites, though Civ6 is also fun), the AI interfere with my empire and me.
They declare war on me. Sometimes it's because I settle too close, sometimes it's revenge for my earlier declaration.
The AI try to win the game, by building spaceships or winning UN resolutions (Civ3) or by building affinity wonders or Beacons (BERT). I need to be cognizant of what they're doing. I need to respond to what they're doing. So far, Civ7 is following in that legacy. I spent less time playing Civ4 and Civ5, but my memory of those games is similar: I needed to be aware of what the AI were doing and respond to it. Civ4 AI (in particular) would vasselize weaker civs, becoming a military and tech powerhouse with the potential of running away.

Regular ages, AI that disrupts, positive experience

My personal record is how much woods I can transplant in one game. I want all continents to be covered in woods, with just one railroad line connecting cities, roads only to connect resources, cities will starve, I will give them maybe two tiles of improved grass and that's it. I want my ultimate Utopian green world. This has always been my personal victory. All other civs also must be kept alive if only with one city. The faster I get world domination, the faster I can begin the Free Utopia. Not being able to plant woods has killed the game for me, this one of the reasons I played Civ VI but never fall in love with it, even if it had Sanctuaries, I could only do it playing with Vietnam...
One other personal Goal is to make One city reach 50 pop, this is very hard unlees you have not made the map yourself. A cool rule is to prohibit wood cutting also.
We are a civilization that hates Nature, that fights it. Some civs in the past, like the Celts, had a law where you could get death penalty if you would cut a tree.
Tree were sacred. The Romans killed that Utopian vision in th grand scale, but it still remains in pockets of civilized people.

I'm so glad to see this poll confirm my suspicion - about 75% are reporting they have a positive experience with the game (after all, I guess we are the game fanatics) and all the negativity on here is a loud minority

I would say the massive sales, reviews and player count cratering make it clear who the majority actually is.

The “loud minority” here are people offering feedback because they enjoy the franchise enough they hope that will help course correct
