Sarcasm may or may not be included. The sixty-third episode of PolyCast, an official podcast of Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS), is now netcasting. "That Makes One of Us" features regular co-hosts Daniel "DanQ" Quick, Makahlua, Imran Siddiqui and Annalee "Cartimandua" Barney with first-time guest co-hosts Brian "bestbrian" Estrada and Huy Phuong "kniteowl" Quach.

PolyCast is a bi-weekly audio production in an ongoing effort to give the Civ community an interactive voice on game strategy. A nominee in the "Best Produced" and "Gaming" categories of the 2008 Podcast Awards, sibling show ModCast focuses on Civ modding and RevCast focuses on Civilization: Revolution.

The summary of topics is as follows:

- 03m07s | Research Lab
On the merits of Wind and the Age of Sail reflected in Civilization, whether a Rifled Cannon would be a good choice to put in the game, and a push for more realistic aerial warfare.
- 18m07s | Forum Talk
What to do about those blue circles in CivIV, and commonly used acronyms in the Civ community.
- 24m02s | Senate
Are Explorers of any use in CivIV.
- 29m02s | Mailbag
Return to Civilization: we respond to a follow-up from Sal "Thorburne" Serio about simulating realism in the series.

- Intro/Outro | Miscellaneous
Making math fun with an ongoing, detailed CivIV quiz, the game's intro video plus a song by Queen equals excellent, questions for a guest from the head of their fan club, and why that guest hopes to return to the show someday.

As always, enjoy.

Man, that letter reading software sure sounds creepy - I half expected it to start referring to you as "Dave".

That was fun, Dan. Thanks to you and all for having me on, and an even bigger thanks for the amazing editing job that makes me sound semi-coherent. :goodjob:

(Oh, and the Rifled Cannons argument might be somewhat moot. I just downloaded the WolfRevolution Mod and Wolfshanze tackled this issue in his mod, and it's quite the elegant solution. I wish I knew about this before we recorded. :) ).

Nice. I may not comment much but I do listen to most of these just so you know :goodjob:

That was wonderful. I was so flattered that you not only cured me of my accent, but I got to sound like Hal-ette in the bargain.

Goodness, I sounded so darn sexy and intelligent I might just get one of those voice thingies for real life!

Thanks for letting me participate Dan. (Or should I call you Dave as well?)

BTW, the bestbrian fan club meets every Tuesday in the pub around the corner from his gym. This weeks agenda includes a discussion of his muscles, why he loves his siren so much, and his quest for revenge on a certain Irish woman. Join us then!

:p

i knew i'd sound strange lol... sounds like I have a Nasally voice lol... I can also hear myself drink coffee but people listening probably don't realize it lol.

maybe I shouldn't guest co host at 4:30am :S lol

Looks like the record of the question of whether or not I'd host again was cut off because I ran outta space on my C drive lol.

well would u mind a random drop in if i happen to be up at 4:30 am on Sundays? :P lol.

Which is highly unlikely unless I've been playing a game of Civ & lose track of time... but I need a new Graphics card 1st lol.

@ bestbrian

Can you post a link to the mod? I'd like to see how they fixed the Rifle Canon thing myself.

"You can't afford my licensing fee, Dave."

;)

You're welcome -- thank you for joining us. :)

... we're all our harshest critic I think.

Somewhat moot perhaps, yes, but not entirely as it's still applicable to the game 'proper'.

I can do that: here you go.

Thanks for checking in, CCR. Glad you're enjoying them! :king: Longtime listener?

No, I didn't realize you were drinking coffee at the same time. You might not be able to hear it in this finished product at all due to my post-production efforts, but even during the recording I couldn't tell anyway.

maybe I shouldn't guest co host at 4:30am :S lol
Being online to record at that time of morning locally deserves a  for sure!

Looks like the record of the question of whether or not I'd host again was cut off because I ran outta space on my C drive lol.

You could move some of the data on your internal HD to e.g. an external (USB) HD, at least temporarily to give you some more recording space.

Is it only me?

because I can't find the Elusive Gunpowder Seige Unit (Pre-canon).

I was thinking of having Canons require Military Tradition and Steel to push it further down the tech tree.

He's got the Bombard coming in with Gunpowder and Muskets coming in with a separate tech called (appropos) Muskets. :) IIRC, Cannons come in with Chemistry.

I especially enjoyed the guest appearance by HAL2000.

Tune in next time, when we'll hear Solver say "Photon torpedoes armed and ready, Captain " ; )

I Was thinking about the introducing a new gunpowder seige unit (aka Bombard) that may obsolete ealy issue, instead of having the bombards upgrade to Canons, keep it as a secondary weaker Seige unit specialised in something.

From memory, I believe you can still build Catapults in the middle ages, even though you've researched the technology for Trebs. Where trebs are specialised in city raiding and Catapult are better used in the field.

You could have the same thing with Canons & Bombards, each seige unit specialising in a particular area, it would solve the early obsoleting problem, at the same having a seige unit available at Gunpowder without having the strange Rifle & Treb Army Combination.

I agree. More historical realism and better gameplay at the same time.

For that matter, maybe muskets should - Oh wait, that's another thread:blush: ...
