This has got to be the first 'Modern' game I've had that's failed to load after install. Even Battlefield 2, as slow as it was, could at least run. If this isn't patched in the next day, I can only infer that Firaxis has some of the most incompetant programers working for them in the industry. Based on reading the posts, it appears virtually no one with an ATI graphics card has gotten it to pass the loading screen yet.

Honestly, I think Firaxis was rushed to release the game by Take-Two, and it shows in the lack of testing and bug-hunting.

I'm on an ATI X300 and it's been starting fine.....so it's not everyone with an ATI, but maybe a majority.

There seem to be a pattern there, almost everbody wtih ATI problems have the XT version of the card or a card that do not support T & L.

Almost everyone with a Pro or an ordinary ATI card I've spoken to can make the game run just fine.

9600 Pro here, no dice.

Omg, I was convinced that my video card wouldn't work with CivIV after reading all of these posts about ATI graphic cards, but after Clifff's post, I am relieved that my ATI Radeon 9600XT should work tomorrow when I buy it at Best Buy. Now my CivIV anticipation has come to an end...almost. I still have a whole entire day. Clifff, you are my hero!

A lot of people at firaxis use ATI cards themselves. As such, your criticisms may be a little exagerrated.

I use a normal radeon 9600. No game. It's not just the XT cards.

You know what pisses me off the most? Those little l33t-offs complaining on IGN about how "omg civ4 is teh crapx0rz c0mpred 2 aoe3 lolz!" are obviously playing the game before me. Well, at least one of them has to be.

Cliff can you give us any info about your driver/system? I have a 9600XT and I can load the game up to the XML point and then it crashes back to desktop. Did you install the DirectX on the CD? etc? Anything out of the ordinary?

Let's put a stop to this myth right now. I have a 9550 and a 9600 Pro... both fine ATI cards that play all other games great. Civ 4 doesn't work with either of them. I've got the latest ATI drivers. I've got the latest DirectX... yada, yada, yada. I've also got a 50 dollar game that is a major flop. I'm thinking of returning the game unless a patch comes out ASAP!!!

9800 XT 256MB
Drivers version 6.14.10.6517
Dated 2/22/05

Works fine

Yeah strange. I posted this in another thread. I have yet to see a 9800 that didn't work. Pro, XT, or vanilla all seem fine. Vanilla is those that didn't specify. I wonder why this is. Could just be a coincidence since the 9600/9550 are more common, but I would assume that there are as many 9800 owners as x800 or x700 and those two seem to have issues.

Just a thought.

As for Pro vs XT...that label means nothing unless you really have an ATI card. I have an MSI 9800Pro that shows up as an XT in dxdiag because it is an underclocked XT with some missing features (chip temp sense). With all the varried manufacturers labeling things like this and LE, and SE and other stuff, many people only know what is printed on their box.

9800 Pro 128mb: Works fine
Omega Drivers (2.6.61)

From what ive noticed (in the 8 other threads on this topic, cmon guys you dont need to start new ones) is that its not a hardware problem, its a software problem. There was also a thread earlier about T&L... radeons above (not including) 7000 HAVE T&L, so thats only a problem for a few people, who i doubt expected the game to run anyways. I think ive seen just about every kind of radeon in this both work and not work according to people's posts. This leads me to believe that in alot of the cases, where details werent specified, the problem may not have been the graphics card, AND that the problem may be based (although i doubt it) on the card manufacturer, or (more likely) that its a problem with drivers and/or directX. Its been noted in another thread that you MUST install the DX9c that comes with the game (because it includes non-standard libraries) AND its been suggested that the primary culprit when installing the packaged DirectX is the fact that older versions of radeon graphics drivers are usually not removed when you update. Also keep in mind that there have been about 10 different bugs reported in this forum, so there are probibly many different issues.

But i do agree with the general feeling around here: This game was very, very, VERY poorly bug-checked.

It was stated that downloading the Omega Drivers has solved a lot of the former problems, but not all. You might want to check out the thread with "Omega" in the title and go to that site to download the latest drivers from there. Might at least get you up and playing, if not solving all the graphic glitches.

Friend has a Radeon 9600 Pro which will run the game fine.

There is still something up with ATI though.

Cool down people. No game is perfect from the beginning. It's impossible to program a game which works on every single computer out there. Most of the times it's a configuration problem on the user's side.
