Portable Civilization

I'm thinking of buying a portable computer. Will civ1 run on it? Shall I be able to play in a comfortable way? I'd thank any suggestion. Thanks a lot and sorry for my incorrect English.

I used to play Civ1 on a monochrome laptop computer. It wasn't easy because of the keypad changing and it was best to know all the shortcut keys, but it was possible and still worthwhile.

I've played quite a bit on my laptop recently.

The program works fine... there are a few frustrations though like not having a numeric keypad, so all diagonal moves of units have to be done with G+mouse instead of an arrow key (unless you know some clever keyboard emulation tricks I don't.)

Let us be honest, it will be very difficult to run civ1 for dos if XP is installed on your laptop, as will probably be the case.
Like stormerne, I used to play it on a BW laptop, but I was civ-enraged a the time.
The best would be a second-hand laptop with an older OS.

Not at all, I have a new HP laptop running XP and the game runs fine! I use civ.bat and have it launch in full-screen mode. I turn the "numeric keypad" on, which turns UIO-JKL into 456-123. The only annoying thing is that I have to temporarily turn the keypad off to issue an irrigation command....

Do you have Soundblaster sounds, void?
I'm surprised it runs at all in XP, I thought I tried once.

Oh, I always turn sounds off (options 1 & 1!), so maybe that's the only reason it wasn't working for you?

It's funny, I've never played civ with sounds, even back in my Amiga days. I always listen to music when I'm playing.

Heretic! Civ1 sounds are the best you'll get from a 12 year old game. I never get tired of them.

Civ3 plays like a charm on my Dell Laptop with Windows ME.

So does Civ1 for Windows.

But alas, Civ1 DOS will not play on my laptop with ME. (Thank goodness I have a desktop with Windows 98.)

Has anyone been successful in running Civ1 DOS on a laptop with Window ME or on a desktop with ME?
