If I understand correctly, Portugal will be able to load settlers on its UU Caravel. If this is true, I can't wait to play a Terra map and ship some colonizers over to the New World after Optics, set up shop there and move my Palace.

It can only hold military units.

Really? I thought as a replacement for the caravel it can do all the original unit can do (i.e. carry 'special' units, e.g. workers, settlers, scouts, explorers, spies, GPs and missionaries) plus carry military units (which the regular caravel can't). Otherwise it seems a little silly, as you cant send those early middle game explorers to new continents to plunder all the tribal villages.

Being able to carry military units doesn't mean it can only carry them...

I don't think it will carry settles, but military units are pretty good. You can take over a barbarian city on the New World, or harass someone who can't reach you back on a continents map.

as far as we know now it can carry can carry military units and special people like: scout, explorer, missionary, spy, or great people (worker and settlers are no special people)

That seems likely. Settlers will have to wait for galleons still, assumedly...

Why would settlers have to wait for galleons? Maybe they'll do it that way, but it won't make any sense. Right now, the carrying limitations on a caravel can be attributed to small hold size. Scouts, explorers, missionaries, and spies are all single people, or small groups. Military units and settling expeditions would be much larger. Any ship that can carry military units should be able to carry settlers.

^^^This, I believe, is where gameplay takes precedence over realism. On a terra map, for only one civ to be able to populate the new world that far in advance would be WAY OP. imagine that you are Rome, and you sail your galleon (which you are the first to get) over to the new world to find that the AI has already set up 6 cities and have improved the land there already and have cultural control over much of the strategic areas of the land mass. That would not be happy.

So as Rome, make sure you kill take all of his old world possessions while you have the upper hand, and let him expand in his crappy new world in peace. ;) Or even better - make him cede you his captured barbarian city instead of crushing him.

And besides they created more of a settlement then a village or town in real life. In the game they create cities.

It's gonna be awesome (and grossly overpowered) to get to be sending Macemen to the new world around 1000AD (if you beeline for Optics, that is)

I'm looking forward to playing my first game as Portugal on a terra map for that reason. My hunch is that it will work fine on marathon, but on standard speed the window won't be open long enough to stop the Dutch from muscling in.

Maybe that means that if you're Portugal, Crush the Dutch first.

Even if they cant carry settlers (which i doubt).. Send military, take over barbarian towns, make a settler farm out of the first city you find, then its time to make colonies ;)

This is, of course, assuming that you:

1. are not at war with other civs
2. are not friendly or pleased with portugal
3. have a large enough army to assure an old world victory
4. have the support of your allies (I.E. they are not friends with portugal)
5. are not involved in heavy trade with portugal
6. are not going for a diplo or cultural vic and can allocate resources to a large scale war.

 :(

If i meet all these criteria, i will surely crush Portugal's old world empire. Other than that, my original point remains.

Bright day
They will eventually release Brasil, or whatever it is that they release. Plus likely they won't take too much land as barbarians can be quite a mouthfull at first- they will have huge numbers.
