I own a MSI Motherboard - KT3 Ultra series (VIA KT333 chipset).
I've heard that capacitors on these boards fail rather frequently, and upon visual inspection, at least one capacitor has blown on my board.
This causes the board to become unstable if the processor is clocked to spec. For example - my processor is supposed to have a 133Mhz FSB, but CPU-intensive tasks like GTA3 and CivIV are HIGHLY unstable at this speed. By simply reducing the FSB speed to 128Mhz, I've completely removed all my crash problems, and everything runs smoothly with no CTD problems.
I've tried a few different values for the FSB, and 130 is fairly stable, but I could only play for like 60mins, but at 128Mhz, it has run 6-8 hours on end with no problems at all.
Moral of the story - if you're having random crashes, try to underclock your CPU a bit and try it then. Hell, try the minimum speed first, just to see if that could be the problem.
Hope this helps someone - most likely I just have a really crappy m/b, and I'm the only one who this will work for
