Possible Loss of Apolyton SMACX Archives

Ah, the good old days. :)

I think these days are pretty good. CFC SMAC used to be a secondary forum to 'poly. Now I think it is on its way to emerging as the premier forum although I haven't done the competitive analysis I use to do (too busy).

While I am the administrator of a "competing" forum, I am placing it in a holding pattern for scient's return rather than competing with the growth of this forum, which has the advantage of being part of a larger site that has a very active and growing Civ 5 community.

Although the loss of the 'poly archives is distressing, the threads Petek saved probably constitute the huge majority of useful information (although I think the demogames are probably useful to new players as examples of thinking -- in particular the Spartans in AGDC3).

It would be nice if someone in the future could wikify the information in those threads, but I am too busy with other pursuits at the moment. (It would also be nice if Rubin's work on bugs would be available before scient comes back, but that is something out of the control of Petek and myself.)

I hope that when the current Civ 5 interest has drop that this forum will continue it current level of activity.

Update - Robert Plomp posted on 'poly that the old Apolyton server will be taken down this Dec. 17. Robert posted earlier that he would set up a place to house the threads I downloaded. Those threads are safe (since I have them), but if anyone wants to save other threads, now is the time to do so.

Note: There has been no change regarding my advice to Darsnan about the threads that interest him.

Feel free to copy or link elsewhere. I don't think this info was ever posted in the 'poly or WPC SMAC forums, so I'll do so.

Update: As of today (Dec. 20, 2010), the link in the first post in this thread no longer works. The server on which it resided was taken down.

While browsing a thread in the Civ 2 forums, I discovered that CFC member codehappy saved all the Apolyton archives (including the SMAC threads) and placed them here. Thanks to codehappy! The formatting of the threads isn't great, but they can be read. I haven't checked, but any links in the threads may not work. Still, the text is there and that's what's important!

ETA: It also should be possible to search the archives using Google's advanced search and specifying codehappy.net for "search within a site or domain."

Great news :D

Apolyton restored their archive files (including those for SMACX), this after we all thought they had been lost. You may find them at the bottom of their main forum page. After some brief tests, it seems that the archived attachments and links also work again. Minute Mirage's library of links to SMACX discussions also now works. (I highly recommend that players who are new to the game, or who have recently discovered the world of SMACX discussion forums, browse through these threads as time and interest permits)
