The science department is a great way to learn how this game works. I experienced it myself.

what kind of things specifically does the person in charge of the science do?
would they be looking down the tech path and deciding what to research etc?
do you think the person who heads up the science should have responsibility for any great scientists that are born in any of our cities, or is that jumping a bit too far?

As Science Officer, you'd start discussions on which techs we should be researching. Example (Until now we didn't have a science officer).
Everyone could discuss the various proposals for techs, and in the end someone would make a poll to decide what we should research, or the official decides.

Alchemy Office Amendment to the Tribal Government Act of 4000 BC
Purpose: Our nation has developed to the level that scientific research is now of critical importance for our survival. Therefore this amendment will establish the office of head alchemist, who will be responsible for the technological advancement of our great nation.
Section 1:
The following paragraph will be added after the paragraphs describing the office of Elder (or Governor should that initiative pass first)
A Head Alchemist will be responsible for the tech path of our civilization. He will issue research orders before each turnchat. The Head Alchemist is encouraged to submit long term research proposals, but should be ready to adjust these in accordance with the wishes of citizens. The Head Alchemist will also have the power to make recommendations to Elders concerning the research output of their cities, as well as recommending changes to the tax rate to the Chieftain.

The only problem I have with that proposal is the name of the official. I, along with some other people, believe that the official should be named more generic, such as philosopher of scientist.

I like it, not hung up on the name as there isn't really an ancient term for scientist.

Grant2004, I suggest you take your proposal to the Initiative phase. The only objection you got was on the name Alchemist but you recevied no objections about the definition of the Alchemy Office. Therefor I suggest you try it as an initiative.

Point 2: No, I do not agree with the name of this office and its officer. First, "Alchemy" sounds...eh. I don't like the way it sounds. In addition, alchemy is a poster boy for what scientists consider pseudoscience; hardly a good name for the office that advances science. Only after a long time did alchemy become chemistry. Finally, I think that "Philosophy Institute" or "Office of the Philosopher-General" would be better, with the title of the officer, of course, been "Philosopher-General."

.Thank you Hyronymus, that is a very wise suggestion, I'll give the idea of posting an poll a little more time, to make sure that there aren't large objections to it, but I will follow you're scheme exactly.

The thing is, people keep on calling this office the "science officer"...so why don't we just do that. I would be ok with the current name, but I would like a less pseudosciencey name, and more of a scientist's. Seeing as there is a somewhat universal agreement that until this office is named, it is the science officer, why not just let it stay that way.

This would increase the likelyhood of the initiative being passed and not being stagnated at the argument over the name.
I appreciate your efforts concerning this issue. This is one of the problems that we have in the DG that has not been resolved. Hopefully, this will be a stepping stone. So I am in favour of this initiative.

I thought alchemy office would be a good idea as it had 4 supporters on the previous page, however you are correct if we're going to push this initiative without a name and request that the name be amended latter we want something generic so that the renaming process isn't biased. I will post the poll on this, and it will contain the title science officer as that is the most generic name for the office we've had.
