If its true that gold will have a very important/strategic aspect to civ this go around then US's manifest destiny might serve gamers well.

In prior versions gold was usually reserved to upgrade units, which in the grand scheme of the game didn't serve THAT big of a purpose.

but now that you can expand (only one hex at a time). The ability to do so at a discounted rate my prove highly beneficial
 
Something that can be considered a new type of economy in CiV is the 'Gift Economy': gift goodies to your allied city-states and reap the rewards.

That's hardly cost effective in economical terms. You'll probably lose money but get other benefits.
