Preventing ai from requesting open borders...

We've been testing out the change to open borders at cautious and above, and it's working fairly well, still, might want to use a baseline then adjust from that baseline for each leader type (right now ALL leaders are cautious in regards to open borders).

I've been thinking about this more...

Trade Treaty
Requires- Peace Allows- Non-Aggression Treaty Relations-Neutral
- Allows ½ the trade generated by the vanilia 'Open Borders' treaty.
- Allows trading of maps, gold, and tech. (with the other standard requirements as well)

Non-Aggression Treaty
Requires- Trade Treaty Allows- Open Borders Relations- Cautious

- Allows the full trade generated by the vanilia 'Open Borders' treaty.
- Allows civilian units (scouts, explorers, great people, work boats...) access to land/water.
- Allows trading of maps, gold, and tech. (with the other standard requirements as well)

Open Borders Treaty -
Requires- Non-Aggression Treaty Allows- Defensive Pact Relations- Friendly

- Basically the vanilia 'Open Borders' treaty.
- Allows trading of maps, gold, and tech. (with the other standard requirements as well)

And then there's Defensive Pact and Military Alliance... not sure if these need changes though.

Could also incorporate unit supply... not sure how.

Hmm, maybe this will turn out to be the Treaty Mod Component™? :D

Thoughts?

If you want to try the change to Open Borders where it starts at cautious relations, here you go. :)

It works fine, keep in mind though I'm new and clueless in regards to mods, so I make no warrenties that this won't cause a problem if you're running other mods.

BACK UP Civ4LeaderHeadInfos.xml to be safe.

Unzip and copy the XML file (Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV/Assets/XML/Civilizations/Civ4LeaderHeadInfos.xml).

So we've finished a several of games with the modified more difficult to get Open Borders.

What we've noticed so far;

-The AI asks much less for Open Borders, this allows a player to pretty much not be annoyed by it (happens less than 1/10 of one percent as often as a guesstimate).

-The AI still asks other AI for Open Borders at about the same frequency, often times if the option is to ask then both AIs will agree to it.

-More short wars for the AI, tends to not be full blown wars but rather quick police actions- grab a couple cities then relax type of thing.

-Less Defensive Alliances, still happens but not WWI era insanity.

-Much less Military/Permanent Alliances, it's pretty hard for the AI to reach this level, but it still usually happens 1-2 times a game.

-Slightly less tech trading.

The basics of it are this, the AI has to be at a higher relation level with a Civ before it will ask or agree to Open Borders (in vanillia 2 Civs meet they almost immediately sign Open Borders, or pretty soon thereafter). Because of this the level of relations between Civs slows down as they are not receiving the bonuses from Open Borders as early or as long.

The specific impacts of this are that; getting higher level treaties takes even longer, tech trading is somewhat more difficult, asking for help happens a bit less often (this is decent when is comes to help in war, as it seems when you are able to ask, the Civ actually is more able to fight), there are more sporadic borders wars (again because AI doesn't sign Open Borders nearly as fast after a war relations improve slowly).

Later this week I'll put together a new file where the minimum request level for Open Borders will vary by Civ with the mean level of relation being lower to ask.

tata :)

Grats on getting this done jgbaxtor. I may have to download it when I get back in town and check it out. :goodjob: It may be a little while though before I post about it. I get back on Friday which is the same time the update to FfH2 will be released and I can't wait to see the upgrades. :D
