Every game of civ3 ive played to the end has resulted in me or the enemy having a diplomatic victory.

I consider the diplomatic victory to be the worst "feature" of the civilisation series.

Diplomatic victory (build the UN) is a tech victory just like spaceships, except it ends the game at 3/4 time, just before the big fight at the end.

Sure i could turn off diplomatic victory at the start, but that gives me an empty feeling like im not playing it properly, and it cant be done in game of the month.

Has anyone been involved in a game where the game hasnt ended within a few turns of the UN builng built, If so how did you do it ?

What strategies do you use to protect yourself from the game ending in a diplomatic victory ?

Or if another civ is getting close to building the UN, declare war on them, and buy everyone into an alliance against them. Capture the city the UN gets built in, and raze it.

Normally I'd turn off that victory option. My ideal victory is to march my armies over the dead bodies of my enemies and not to be given victory by my enemies because they like me. :) An irritating distraction.

Otherwise, I'll make damn sure I built the UN. I don't like sucking up to the AI all the time, just to make sure no one wins or at least I'll win.

I think the key to avoiding the AI obtaining a diplo victory is war. You must somehow get everyone to fight each other. Use the F4 key and watch for MPP between rival AI's. Then try to get them to fight triggering a world war. When civ's are fighting or have fought it tends to hurt relations a lot. When someone is angry at you they probably won't vote for you at the UN.

God, if there were only a "sabotage reputation" option for espionage. That would be the ultimate reputation-buster. Funny 'till being used on YOU.

A diplomatic victory is just that... a victory by winning over the other civs!

So if you build the UN but don't want the diplomatic victory, don't hold the vote.

If another civ ends up building the UN, then you have a few options. The war options have already been discussed. there is another option though.

If you want to win by diplomatic victory, or at least not lose when someone else has the UN, you need to be the most popular. You have five years to do this. You basically have to give away the farm. Overtrade all your gold and luxuries and resources and sign mutual protection pacts with EVERYONE. Be the nicest guy imaginable. Pay particular attention to the civs that have been muted by other civs.

Note during this trading rush that the other largest civ is most likely to be running against you. So its basically between you and the other civ. Know who that civs enemies are and sign treaties and pacts with them.

Also it doesn't hurt to be friends with the other civs during the game normally. Don't attack more than one civ at a time unless they attack you, and watch out for pacts that draw too many enemies in with you. I played out a diplomatic victory once where I was the only civ to vote for myself. As a test I went back a save and signed trade and pacts with two nations and they turned on a dime and that time I won. Its that easy sometimes.

Make MPP with the other AI's, and trade something to the UN-AI and make 'em declare war on you. That will ruin his reputation. But the best way to avoid this is clearly to build the UN yourself (best done by prebuilding a palace, it's quite possible!). It's my favorite win condition, but it doesn't get yourself that many points.

If you sign MPP with all the others civs, there will be a high chance for you to win the vote.

Yeah - but too bad that in the Industrial and Modern Ages, the AI usually starts beating me in the tech race. I've had to deal with such unfair trades where the AI asks me for all my gold + 20 gpt so I only make 30 gpt a turn. Big problem for me - does anyone else have the same scnario?

BBdragon check out the war academy for advice on how to get and hold a tech lead.
