Printer stops printing after first few pages

I have been using a Brother HL-1440 at home for a few years, it's been great until it started acting up about a month ago. (broke the night before I have a brief due at the 2nd Circuit, I had to race back to my office to print it. Terrible experience!)

What happens with the printer is that, the first few print jobs usually come out okay, but then it stops working. (if the first print job is large, it will often print the first 20 or so pages, and then quit) Sometimes the print job just disappears; other times the printer won't print anything. The status says "error printing", but no further information is provided.

I have windows xp and has the newest driver. I don't think it is a toner issue because the pages that do get printed look just fine.

Anyone have a clue what is wrong here?

Maybe you need to replace its drum cartridge? It could be separate from the toner and needs to be replaced separately... Check the manual if you still have it (or find a PDF version online).

Definetly smells of an issue with the printer itself. Is it possible to try printing to it from another PC to see how it behaves then?

Do you know if your model can print out status info (on my HL-5250DN you press the 'Go' button 3 times quickly)? If you can, do so and see what it says. My 5250, at least, has awesome internal tracking of the status of all its components, tracks errors, etc... hopefully yours does the same but I can't say for sure - this is the only Brother printer I've owned.

I hooked up my laptop to it and printed from the laptop, same problem.

Does that mean the issue is with the printer itself?

More than likely, but maybe it is the data wire that connects to the computer itself. You could try a differnet wire or somthing.

I tried using parallel and USB cables, same result with both. I guess this means my printer is the problem. Sad, the thing lasts only 2 years.
