Privateers (and other hidden nationality units)

Darn, knew I should've put in a smiley. Basically, in the unit definition files, there would be a flag for "can be made rogue". This would apply to most infantry, and most wooden hull ships, and almost nothing else. Carriers an't be made rogue!

It would be nice if it could there was a flag for turning rogue.

There are was for was for even the most complex equipment to turn rogue:
-defections.

And a company/terrorist group/drug group/etc could figure out a way to make these vehicles rogue too. Probable, no, possible yes.

That being said, I don' t think i'm for capital assets: carriers, bombers, fighters should be susceptable to becoming rogue.

But the whole point about privateers is that their governments did NOT CONTROL them. Anything else really strains credibility. Making them computer controlled makes the game more immersive.

My system expands the general privateer concept so you can have rogue troops at any level of technology. Well, maybe not rogue aircraft carriers though.

ETA: Sure, you put in an automate command, but no successful player has ever used the automate worker command. I can't imagine any good player intentionally limiting his options to win.

Privateers are a lot more fun than workers. I often automate workers, and I'm extremely successful - I have a lot of fun playing Civ. Anyway, heads of government exerted much more direct influence over the actions of privateers than over exactly where every mine in the country was placed and when.

this makes sense, but would take away my current tactic of 3-4 privateers stcked with a frigate. I go around the AI's territory or open waters and gang up on units with the privateers and the frigate being stacked on them protects them from attack by countries I'm not actually at war with
and on a related note: subs should be able to attack like privateers without causing war since they wouldn't be identified while submerged. although I supposed that combined with their invisibility would make them too powerful
